Cobden’s Hotel, a stone built countryside pub and hotel once owned by 19th century cricketer, Frank Cobden, is on the market with specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co.
The historic Grade II listed hotel is situated in the heart of Snowdonia National Park in the mountain village of Capel Curig. Capel Curig, close to Betws-y-Coed, is a popular year-round destination for mountain bikers, walkers and climbers who are drawn to the area for its wide range of activities on offer.
Overlooking the River Llugwy, the hotel boasts 21 bedrooms, 19 of which are en suite, a 90-cover restaurant and dining room, and the unique Mountain Bar which is built around a rock with a fresh water stream running through it. Set within its own grounds with a patio beer garden and onsite parking, a seven-bedroom detached owner’s house is also included in the sale. The hotel comes with land and a river opposite the hotel to which it holds the fishing rights, which is frequented for training purposes by the local training services and is a focal point for tourists wishing to walk, canoe or swim in the river.
The hotel is renowned for its sporting history since celebrated cricketer, Frank Cobden purchased the hotel in 1890, attracting clients from all over the UK. Frank acquired his celebrity status in 1870 after his exceptional performance in a match against Oxford University. Frank led his side, Cambridge University, to victory after securing a hat trick, and hence the game became known as ‘Cobden’s Match’.
The current owners are reluctantly having to sell the hotel due to health reasons.
