Tuyo – Contemporary Mediterranean Kitchen Opens in Broadway Market

Broadway Market in Hackney has gained a new resident with the opening of Tuyo, a new restaurant serving a menu of Mediterranean and Levantine small plates with a Spanish twist.

Opened on 17th July 2017, work on Tuyo was completed by Koldo&Co, a UK based international design practice that specialises in architecture, interiors and bespoke furniture. Koldo&Co were tasked with fitting out the new restaurant concept on an existing ground floor commercial site that was previously used as a restaurant.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality magazine, Koldo Gil, Creative Director at Koldo&Co said: “The project entailed a complete new fit out following the concept design we created for our client, a concept that allowed for the food to be the main protagonist, yet at the same time being fresh and welcoming. From new floors, new wall claddings and finishes, lighting, new layouts, bars, furniture and soft decorations.
“The concept and materials used and the way they have been used in this project has been a departure from the current and recent restaurant trend of the use of reclaimed materials, with a rustic and raw feel – a trend particularly used in this area of London. Instead, we wanted to create a fresh, sophisticated and warm space that allows the food to take centre stage.”

Tuyo sits along the canal in Broadway Market with a bright and airy décor that lets in the natural light. An open kitchen greets guest’s right at the entrance while white walls brighten up the interiors with hanging baskets of vibrant plants adding dashes of colour against the light, wooden furniture. A laidback seating area sits underneath neon fittings on the walls with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water, maximising the light and making the most of the restaurants canal side location.

Tuyo, which is translated to “of yours,” is the latest addition to the family-owned Gallipoli restaurant group (also Islington’s La Farola, Gallipoli and Hackney’s El Ganso) but stands apart from its sister sites with a new combination of dishes from a wider range of Mediterranean countries.

Chef Ricardo Pimentel, formerly of the Salt Yard Group, has created a selection of “pinchos” or small bites to share such as Harissa Lamb Rump served with pisto and black olive couscous, pistachio and harissa dressing; Duck and Figs on a bed of pearl barley, gremolata, pomegranate, carrot purée and smoked almond; and Picos Blue and Date Croquetas that are served alongside a selection of charcuterie and cheeses, predominantly sourced from Spain and Italy.

Main dishes follow a Mediterranean theme with hints of Turkish influence such as Chicken Thigh with honey poached apricots, sumac yoghurt and pistachios; Halloumi, roast beetroot, orange hazelnuts and 8 year aged balsamic; Dill and Lime Cured Salmon and Beetroot, served with yoghurt and berries; and Burrata, black beans confit mixed pepper and sourdough croutons.

To one side of the room, a stunning blue bar serves a bespoke list of house cocktails specifically designed to complement the flavours on the menu, including Beso De Lavanda (Hendricks’s, lavender syrup, lime juice); Saffron Aphrodisiac (tequila, agave, coriander, lime juice, chilli peppers and saffron); Greek Style (Hendricks’s, lime, cucumber, black pepper); and Chilli Gunners (Havana Club 3yr, Passoa, raspberry liqueur, lime and homemade chilli syrup).

Koldo commented: “It is exciting to see this project come to life, especially because we were given carte blanche by the client to create something new, not only the space and the ambience, but also the name and the branding that responded to his very unique food concept. We have a long lasting relationship with this client with mutual trust and respect for each other.”

Tuyo is open Monday to Thursday, 10:30am until 11pm, Friday from 10:30am until 11pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am until 11pm.
