The Three Lions

Open to all members, The Three Lions is the first pub in Wembley Stadium’s history. This member’s only spot might just become your new Wembley local.

Work on The Three Lions began approximately a year ago and was undertaken by Design Coalition.

Design Coalition was established in 1982 and is home to a team of experienced professionals. Their focus is offering interior design and architectural services to provide creative value to projects, brands and businesses. They are experienced in new concept, brand development, multi-site developments, conversions and new builds. In house expertise facilitates project management and contract administration from concept to completion.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality about The Three Lions, Design Coalition Director Roy Kirby said: “The brief was to create a pub for Club Wembley at an executive level. The Three Lions is to help support great hospitality for Club Wembley members.”

The Three Lions is located in what has been described as a former “function room space.” The space has now been transformed using pub characteristics and classic materials to give the space a new identity and familiarity that people recognise as a pub.

Roy added: “Everything had to have a classic feel with materials such as earthy tones, leather and a worn effect, so it has that familiarity and pub feel. In Club Wembley there are other outlets including the Bobby Moore Suite, which is more of a VIP area, so Three Lions had to be for all members at all levels. It had to be approachable and we took some of the FA’s core values such as ‘unite’,’ respectful’ and ‘for all’ and weaved those throughout the interior design.

“Along with its warm leathers, mid tone oaks and softer materials we wanted to absorb the light from the long curtain glazing so we darkened the floors using timber floor. Again, it provides the authenticity of the pub environment.

“Due to the size of the space we had to break down the experience to provide more intimate areas for two, as well as larger group spaces, all with the vision of the bar, theatre or activity. Therefore space planning was a major concern to get right. We created a sense of journey and discovery towards each bar servery location.

“Lighting was equally important. We used various lighting at all different lighting levels to help with the mood settings to help break down the space into zones.”

At Club Wembley their mission is to match the colour, energy and drama you see on the pitch with the sights, smells and flavours that you experience off it. Whether you’re with family, friends or hosting clients, you’ll find something for every fan.

The Three Lions is now open to members and has been successfully used for two events at Wembley Stadium and was officially launched by Geoff Hurst, Emile Hesky and Wes Brown for the recent England World Cup game.

“It has been really well received, operationally as well,” said Roy. “What was really nice was when we came to the end of the project. For us, everyone was really on board with the new offer and brand. Furthermore it is working.”

Following the site’s redevelopment, it is understood that The Three Lions is now the UK’s largest pub in terms of square meterage and capacity.

Roy concluded: “For me, the project has been very important to be involved with. Working with the FA was a little bit different for us. We have brought on board our experiences; but while it is similar to the type of work we deliver, it is not the usual type of project for Wembley – they have never really approached it in this way before.

“It’s been a pleasure to be able to contribute on the whole concept; we became a firm, fixed part of the team; we took ownership and strived for success for the whole operation.”
