Hotel Viu Milan – Capturing the essence of Milan

Milan’s spectacular new hotel, Hotel Viu Milan, is set in the heart of the city’s emerging Porta Volta neighbourhood, capturing the spirit of the modern-day city with its progressive and sustainable architectural concept, while honouring the classic aesthetics of Milanese design with its sleek interiors.

Architects Arassociati’s bold design for the 124-room hotel stands out thanks to its exterior’s spectacular vertical garden. Rendered in sustainably-sourced wood, metal and bronzed glass, the hotel’s architecture is composed of undulating patterns of indentions and projections that define each storey.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows flood the rooms and guest areas with natural light, creating a sense of location with panoramic city views, ensconcing guests in an inviting, home-like setting reminiscent of a stylish Milanese townhouse.

The lush greenery that bookmarks the property pays homage to Stefano Boeri’s landmark Bosco Verticale project, and demonstrates Hotel Viu Milan’s passion for eco-sustainability. A newly minted public square in front of the hotel will continue the green narrative of this regenerated pocket of Porta Volta.

The hotel’s vertical gardens feature series of planters connected through a network of steel cables threaded with climbing plants, with every spare space given over to lush greenery to create a botanic waterfall

The visual concept of the hotel’s interiors was entrusted to Arassociati Studio and Nicola Gallizia Studio. This collaboration has translated into an interior aesthetic that is both soothing and surprising – thanks to a tonal colour palette and contemporary textures that complement the architecture of the hotel.

Parquet oak wood floors and dark wood contrast perfectly with light colours and fabrics, many of which are handmade and all exclusively created for the hotel by renowned Italian textile company Rubelli.

A tangible celebration of Milanese craftsmanship: the furnishings include specially commissioned key pieces inspired by quintessential Italian design. Delicate nuances and a curated collection of objets d’art reinforce the impression of staying at a private residence—albeit one outfitted with impeccable taste.

Hotel Viu Milan’s fluid ground-floor social spaces open up through the lobby, a light and airy reception area centred around an oversized fireplace.

The inimitable style of legendary designer and architect Gio Ponti inspires the classical lines and artisanal-inspired interiors of the hotel’s entrance area. The black basalt tiled flooring adds a contemporary touch to the space, while carefully-placed rugs mirror the linearity of the furniture design. Original artwork by Sony George dots the grey-hued walls, while stylish sofas are clustered around bookshelves brimming with design and architecture tomes.

The flowing space leads to Bulk, an inclusive and informal restaurant conceptualised by Michelin-starred chef Giancarlo Morelli.

Here, a subtle design shift influenced by the surrounding green spaces translates to hardwood flooring and the use of warmer, nature-inspired tones.

Taking inspiration from a Milanese cultural centre that once resided on the site of the hotel, Bulk has been designed as a multi-faceted social hub centred around regional cuisine, served from the open kitchen.

Low, cosy seating encourages languid lunches and casual coffee meetings, while the charmingly eclectic collection of vintage furnishings and design classics recalls images of an attic trove tucked away in a grand Milanese townhouse.

Overlooking Porta Volta’s new public square, is Bulk’s Mixology Lounge Bar and Garden with its chic dark-stained teak furniture.

Hotel Viu Milan will also play host to an eponymous gourmet restaurant headed by Giancarlo Morelli, which can be accessed both from the hotel itself and through a standalone street entrance. Restaurant “Giancarlo Morelli” exudes a studied sophistication befitting the Italian capital of fashion and includes a 14-seater kitchen table giving an unrivalled insight into the workings of a Michelin-starred maestro.

The studied elegance that defines Hotel Viu Milan’s visual concept extends to the hotel’s 124 rooms and suites, which are a lesson in meticulously-crafted luxury. A thoughtful neutral colour palette of taupe and wood hues ensure that all attention is on the spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows, which flood the rooms with natural daylight and provide unrivalled views over the Milanese skyline.

The boundaries between inside and out are further blurred by the private terraces which are scattered across the first and seventh floors.

The crowning glory of Hotel Viu Milan, The VIU is the only hotel rooftop in Milan with an outdoor swimming pool that features stunning 360-degree views of the city skyline.

Here, teak lounge furniture is set amid Mediterranean olive trees, creating an urban oasis.
