Bamboo Construction

Jersey-based Bamboo Construction has enjoyed a fruitful last few months thanks to two different but successful projects. At the end of 2017 Bamboo completed work on a complete refurbishment of a residential property known as La Paradise while the beginning of 2018 saw the completion of new build offices for two Jersey-based businesses.

Premier Construction Channel Islands recently caught up with Bamboo Construction Managing Director Andy Cummins to find out more about more about the exciting new additions to Bamboo’s expanding portfolio:

New Offices for AVI and SRJ

Nine months in the making, occupants of this stylish new build office space moved into the property at the end of February 2018.

“This project started with some wasteland that was down at La Collette in St Helier which has now been turned into a new build office block. The building is steel frame with composite panelling and the design was actually supposed to look like shipping containers with round porthole windows. The client wanted a bit more of a modern office so a few quirky bits have been added in to try and modernise it. The views are absolutely fantastic.

“The challenge was that all the services such as water and gas have historically been put wherever and no one quite new exactly where they now were. Through this it had become a wasteland to keep containers or store boats that were being renovated by the Sunseeker shed next door.

“It was quite a vision from the guys at SRJ and AVI because everyone thought they were mad choosing to build here but once you see the views they have it makes total sense. Everyone who comes to the office is absolutely blown away by the offices. It’s an original, one and only view of Elizabeth castle and the goings on in the harbour. This was our first big, commercial office type project and it’s been really successful.”

La Paradise

Working with Layzell Architects, Bamboo Construction was tasked with carrying out a significant overhaul of an existing residential property.

“We were originally contacted by Will Layzell to tender for the work at La Paradise on St Clements coast road. We hadn’t worked with him before and his office is actually in London but he’s originally from Jersey.

“The project was basically a complete refurbishment of a house. This included a big, flat roof extension with balconies on top at the back of the property. Internally it’s now open plan with a large kitchen and dining room that opens into a lounge. The bedrooms upstairs have been ripped out and renovated and the bathrooms have been redone. The gardens have also been landscaped.

“Access was a slight challenge, as was some of the detailing of the steel work. We had to take the whole back of the house off but leave the original roof so we had to prop this up and expose the back of the roof while we were building. Overall, this project ran quite smoothly.

“I think we’ve managed to pull off what the client’s wanted and that’s a testament to Will’s design. I’d like to think there would be other projects we could work with Will on because we’ve developed a really good working relationship. This was important in the sense that it’s another high end finish which we are increasingly becoming known for. Our bread and butter is a project like La Paradise – quality finishes on residential refurbishments. That’s what we’re known for. The AVI project was therefore great because it shows we have the capabilities of achieving whatever is asked of us.”
