E by Equinox – The last word in luxury

The last word in luxury taking fitness to the next level, the magnificent new E by Equinox St James’s private members health club on St James St Mayfair has been superbly created within a stunning historic interior.

Previously a restaurant and a bank, the new venue is on three levels – a 398 sq m basement, 657 sq m ground floor and 390 sq m mezzanine.

The building occupies a unique location and is one of the most exclusive private fitness clubs within the Equinox portfolio. It is also located in one of the city’s most prominent locations and marks the fitness industry’s transition into the luxury market within central London.

Main Contractors for the project to create the new venue were ISG; interior Designers were Joyce Wang Studio, and architects were Woods Bagot.

E by Equinox St. James’s combines Equinox’s science-backed programming, elevated design and a carefully curated member experience, making the club an unmatched luxury offering in the historic neighbourhood.

According to the club: “Inspired by the local community, our St James’s club awes with beguiling spaces and exceptional details. It’s where you unlock your highest performance in an intimate, science-fuelled environment.”

Grand marble pillars, a light-filled mezzanine and copper features pay homage to the perfectly-tailored sophistication of the neighbourhood.

“Opening our first standalone E by Equinox in one of the most esteemed neighbourhoods in London was only fitting,” said Gentry Long, Managing Director of UK Operations for Equinox. “We’re thrilled to introduce an elevated take on the private members’ establishment with fitness at its core.”

Long adds: “London’s health and fitness industry continues to thrive and there is an appetite for spaces where Londoners can truly commit to their health and wellbeing. E by Equinox St. James’s builds on the success of our flagship club in Kensington and answers a demand for the luxury Equinox lifestyle.”

E by Equinox St. James’s exclusively houses Tier X personal training, Equinox’s most advanced and hyper-personalised training and lifestyle coaching program.

The club also boasts a state-of-the-art strength floor, group fitness studio, cardio zone set up on the mezzanine, a private Pilates studio and a signature Precision Running Zone.

A regeneration-focused spa provides innovative treatments including Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-Regulation (BEMER), a therapy which helps to regulate the flow of energy in your body, recovery enhancing compression therapy and performance massages. Members also have access to complimentary gym laundry valet service, chilled eucalyptus-infused towels, an O2 air purifying system in the cardio zone, and a luxury lounge operated by Munch Fit, to refuel.

Joyce Wang, of Joyce Wang Studio said: “The building was very appealing to us. We have retained existing marble columns that have added a lot of character to the space. We extended the mezzanine to enlarge the upper level area and kept and made good existing coffers and mouldings.

“We have completely transformed the interior of the space, creating an elegant gym, unique in London. Two new feature staircases have been completed connecting the basement, ground and mezzanine levels. We also added an accessible entrance. The most prominent materials used in the design palette are metal mesh and timber.”

The project commenced in June and was completed in December 2017.

Joyce Wang concluded: “We are very proud to be part of the first E by Equinox in London, where the impressive facilities will make it the most unique gym in the city.”

Danielle Larsen, Senior Director of Real Estate Acquisitions at Equinox said: “Wellness is becoming more integrated and prioritised in people’s overall lifestyle, and London is at the epicentre of this movement, it has scope to be one of Equinox’s largest markets.

“Equinox’s commitment to the capital led us to one of the most sought-after locations in the market. E by Equinox St. James’s central location and proximity to the finest art galleries, boutiques and historical landmarks is reflected in the club’s elevated style which is grounded in substance.”
