PTC Construction

A little over a year since the company was founded by Chris Matthews and Paul Tedstone, PTC Construction has quickly established itself within the industry. PTC Construction places a large emphasis on building and maintaining strong client relationships. Despite only being in operation for a short time, the company has already completed a number of significant construction projects. Premier Construction recently caught up with Managing Director Chris Matthews to find out a little more about PTC Construction:

What does PTC Construction specialise in?

“We mainly specialise as a design and build contractor but we also have a mechanical electrical division as part of the business. We work in hospitals, hotels, prisons, children’s homes and gyms. We do everything apart from houses really.”

What does your day to day role entail?

“In my role as Managing Director of the company I am up early checking emails, pricing projects and making sure the projects currently underway are running smoothly. I’ll visit the sites and employees, make sure the finances are all in order and make sure health and safety is up to date. I do a bit of everything really. I am not a guy who sits down and lets someone else run the company, I am very hands on.”

You are currently finishing a refurbishment project for Bronllys Hospital in Wales. What did this involve?

“This project was a refurbishment of a mental health suite within the hospital. We were the main contractor. Basically we were refurbishing part of a live hospital into a facility where people with mental difficulties can go. It’s a secure unit with high security measures. We started working on this project in March 2018 and we are just finishing up now. The challenges have been working within a secure facility and the access to the site has also been very difficult, particularly with the snow this year.”

Another Welsh project was a refurbishment of Townhill Library in Swansea. What did this encompass?

“This project involved refurbishing an existing library into a new library for Swansea City Council. This was a major refurbishment of the building and took 12 weeks to complete. The timescale on this project was really tight. The actual library is based within a community centre so members of the public were around during the work and we had to make sure everything was separate from them.”

You also have specialist cladding arm within the company, which proved useful on a recent project for Easy Gym.

“This project was actually an over clad of the existing roof so we weren’t actually working within the gym. The existing cladding system was at the end of its lifespan and we have a specialist cladding arm to the company and that’s how we became involved. In total this was a 2,000m2 refurbishment using a Euroclad over clad system. It took us 16 weeks to complete the project and the gym was operational while the work was carried out.”

Looking ahead to the future, you have just begun working on new children’s home is Swansea. Could you tell us a bit more about that?

“We got involved with the Coedlan Children’s Home refurbishment project last month and it’s going to take 14 weeks to complete. This is a conversion of an existing 5 bedroom property into a secure children’s home. There are no real challenges on this one apart from timescale because the building is in a serious state of disrepair.”

And finally, what does PTC Construction take pride in as a company?

“Obviously we’re a fairly new company but in the last year we’ve managed grow it to turnover £1 million. In that time we’ve also gained the relevant health and safety accreditations such as CHAS and Safe Contractor. I am a chartered surveyor and my business partner is a chartered builder and this helps us standout from the crowd.

“I used to work in Jersey for a company that was very family orientated and I’ve taken that ethos into this business. If there’s a problem, we’ll be honest about it and through it, which I think a lot of people respect. We take pride in the fact that in year one we’ve got clients coming back wanting to do more work with us.”
