Annabel’s

After more than 50 years at the heart of London’s nightlife, Annabel’s has opened the doors to its much-anticipated new home – just two doors down from the original club.

The private members’ club is now housed within a Grade One Listed Georgian Townhouse on London’s Berkeley Square and at 26,000 sq ft comprises considerably more space than the original Club.

For the first time, Annabel’s will offer an all day and all night experience, with new and additional floors for Members to work, dine and entertain their guests. The Club includes four new restaurants, seven bars, two private dining rooms and a cigar salon, spread across four spacious floors. The nightclub is located in the basement of the townhouse and pays homage to the decadent essence and abundant energy of the original Annabel’s. Outside on the terrace, an enchanting restaurant garden seating 120 offers year round dining.

The senior operations team has also been personally recruited by Richard Caring, to ensure the Club’s team is the best in London, including Graziano Arricale as Operations Director, Rebecca Burdess (formerly of Fortnum & Mason) as Membership Director and Astrid Harbord (formerly of Bulgari Hotel) as the Membership Manager.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio oversaw the design of Annabel’s at 46 Berkeley Square. Taking inspiration from the new building’s garden and verdant greenery of Berkeley Square and the spirit of English eccentricity, the new Annabel’s communicates a design which draws direct links to flora and fauna in an eclectic and playful manner.

The team at Martin Brudnizki Design Studio have painstakingly restored original features including a grand cantilevered stone staircase, elaborate plaster ceilings and majestic fireplaces of the Rococo style. Each floor of the four-storey Georgian townhouse tells a unique story, based upon various gardens depicted throughout history, all whilst paying homage to the original architectural detailing of the listed building.

Entering from the ground floor entrance, guests will be welcomed by a traditional reception area, complete with green pleated silk wall coverings, an original marble fireplace and two huge crystal candelabra bought in auction having once featured in Paris, When it Sizzles, featuring Audrey Hepburn. Having restored the original architectural mouldings in the reception area, MBDS have also worked with artisans, George Jackson, to create panels of mouldings depicting fruit and flowers. Painted in white, these lush panels give a nod to the rest of the heavily decorated club as well as adding a whimsical touch to the clean reception.

Moving through the ground floor, The Garden Room forms the main dining area to the Club and spans the length of the townhouse. Providing a sanctuary to guests from morning until night, The Garden Room brims with bespoke detailing, including two Murano chandeliers made up of pink tulips and a statement, pink bar made from marble and shaped like leaves. The bar has been backlit to create a glowing effect, adding a magical touch to the dreamlike space. The adjoining Garden Terrace, with its fully retractable roof, offers guests an escape from London’s hustle and bustle.

The Elephant Room takes centre stage on the first floor, with its gold-leaf backed bespoke wallpaper by de Gournay. Inspired by the painting Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II riding his prized elephant, Atash Khan by Farrukh Beg, the room is dressed with patterned furniture, timber tables and antique floor lamps. A statement bar crafted from timber and brass showcases a paisley-patterned roof inspired by traditional Indian canopies; this adjoins one half of the room with the other which features an alternative de Gournay wallpaper showing jungle scenes with exotic birds, tigers and panthers.

On the second floor, guests can sample a Mexican Bar complete with the largest selection of tequila outside of Mexico. Timber flooring and a sealed copper-leaf ceiling are offset by leather armchairs in tones of orange, yellow and tile-topped tables and a large collection of Mexican-themed artwork. The relaxed ambience of this room plays to a younger group of members who will be able to use this room throughout the day for work and through to night when it turns into a restaurant.

In the basement, an overarching theme of exotica stretches throughout. The Jungle Bar, for example, includes eglomise panels featuring exotic birds, flora and jungle animals that are complemented by the boldly upholstered furniture and mirror-topped tables whilst the glowing onyx bar takes centre stage with its back bar complete with elephant heads and silver-plated table lamps.

This theme continues to the nightclub next door, with floor to ceiling palm tree lights, crafted from brass and hand blown glass, providing a canopy to the star and leaf light dressed ceiling. Banquettes in animal prints are dressed with boldly upholstered and trimmed dining chairs whilst the jungle patterned wallpaper is offset by wall lights and the statement corner bar which showcases a glass and brass palm tree canopy and animal print bar stools in leather and velvet.

Founded in 1963 Annabel’s has built a global reputation over the past five decades as the most elegant and private Club in the world. Maximum Climate Control Ltd

Maximum Climate Control Ltd was awarded the prestigious contract for the full mechanical design and build and installation of the new Annabel’s Club at 46 Berkley Square, Mayfair.

The brief was to fully install air conditioning / ventilation and hot water generation throughout the listed building and the rear Mews building on all levels, with the integration of dining rooms, bars, retractable glass roof covered terrace and various other high-end function rooms for the operation of their new flagship Annabel’s Club. All of this would need to be served by hidden fan coils and a ventilation system within the listed building to meet current building regulations, but without causing any damage or alteration to the listed building status.

With this in mind Maximum Climate Control Ltd designed and selected Daikin VRV Heat Recovery Air Conditioning System with a System Air Handling Heat Recovery Ventilation System for the listed building fully installed by the Maximum team with refrigeration pipe work and ductwork. The ground floor retractable glass covered terrace and night club below the terrace were also supplied and fully installed by the team, with some Daikin VRV Heat Recovery Systems and System Air Handling Heat Recovery Systems for fresh and extract air to supply these areas with bespoke duct work to meet DW 144 standards.

Added to this was the requirement for natural gas fireplaces in each room within the listed building, and Maximum Climate Control Ltd, with the help of Victoria Stone, worked hard to allow this to look authentic and match the existing listed surround fireplaces.

All of these above areas require five levels of kitchens and food prep areas. In turn these areas require a high demand of cold water and AO Smith Hot water Generation systems to supply the kitchens, prep areas, all the toilets for both front and back of house and the bars & glass wash areas. Maximum Climate Control Ltd provided and installed all the plumbing / waste and gas pipe work to supply and keep all these areas provided with services to function.

The kitchens required supply and extract systems and again Maximum Climate Control Ltd chose System Air to provide the fans suitable for the removal of the cooker hood extract and also provided the fresh air to kitchens for makeup. The company installed these together with the associated ductwork to meet DW172.

All of the above required controlling and Maximum Climate Control Ltd designed and installed their bespoke remote BMS system that fully controls all cooling / heating / hot water generation / ventilation / kitchen extract fans / and fire alarm interface. In addition, the company came up with a clever way to design the use of the water storage tank for the building for the high pressure mist basement sprinkler system, by use of laser levels and an isolation valve to allow only 10% of the tank to be withdrawn in the event of a mains water failure. This prioritises the tank for fire sprinkler use at all times, and this was due to space constraints for a second mist water tank.

All of the above was commissioned and handed over by Maximum Climate Control Ltd to a satisfied client who operates their club for their customers’ satisfaction, with a comfortable controlled environment with plenty of hot and cold water for their operation.
