Chucs Restaurant

Restaurant and café concept Chucs has enjoyed a successful first quarter of 2018 with the opening on two new sites. In February, Chucs launched its third site within the iconic Harrods department store. This was followed in April by the opening of a fourth site inside of UK’s most popular cultural destinations, the Serpentine Galleries.

Chucs Restaurant & Cafe is the sister concept to the inspired 1950s swimwear, and men’s fashion label, of the same name. Classically Italian at their heart, Chucs venues are intimate, all-day restaurants that combine traditional Italian décor with high service standards.

The Harrods site opened within the department store’s new Fine Watch Room, specialising in flavours of the Italian Riveria and evoking the essence of yacht life and the Mediterranean Sea. To carry out the design of the space Chucs turned to Stiff and Trevillion, who previously worked on the first two sites at Dover Street and Westbourne Grove. Director Richard Blandy commented:

“The brief was that it should match the Dover Street site. I think the Harrods retail team had selected Chucs on the basis of the Dover Street site and so it was our job to recreate that.

“They have redeveloped what was previously the wine section and Chucs is at the bottom of a beautiful marble and stone staircase. They wanted it to be quite discreet so when you are in there you are tucked out of the way. There is also a separate entrance into Chucs which means it can stay open when Harrods is closed.

“The owners of Chucs have several different brands and we’ve worked with them on other projects, not just Chucs. They are a very good client to work for.”

The restaurant’s interiors have been designed to be reminiscent of a luxury yacht, with warm wooden panelling, perfectly polished brass rails and detailing, and framed photographs of the Amalfi coastline adorning the dining room walls. The restaurant will also encompass an elegant bar area, complete with Italian marble bar top and deep blue leather stools, in addition to booth seating and tables with deep brown leather armchairs.

In contrast, Chucs at the Serpentine Galleries is set within The Magazine – Zaha Hadid’s landmark extension to the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. A design collaboration between Stiff + Trevillion Architects, Peter Mikic Interiors, and Isometrix Lighting and Design, the restaurant achieves a luxurious and timeless feel that warmly furnishes the space of The Magazine; distinctive contemporary furniture and striking colours reflect the elegant, 1950s Italian attitude of the Chucs brand. Rich oak and banquette seating juxtaposes the glass walls of this iconic structure. The capacity of Chucs at the Serpentine Galleries is split between the main restaurant (76 covers), a sofa area (20 covers) and an outside area (80 covers).

Open for breakfast and brunch through to lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the diverse menu at Chucs Serpentine created by Group Head Chef Carlos Martinez and Executive Chef Alessandro Verdenelli. Exclusive to Chucs Serpentine is a take-away menu for those who wish to enjoy their meal outside in the Royal Park, offering a selection of paninis including Spicy Italian and various types of Pizzette, homemade ice creams, and Tiramisu.

Yana Peel, CEO of the Serpentine Galleries, London, said:

“I am a great fan of Chucs both in Mayfair and Notting Hill. The food always hits the spot with friends and family; we felt the timeless style of the brand would perfectly enhance this extraordinary building.

“We are excited Chucs will be catering to this diverse community of local and global visitors with everything from a celebratory dinner, to a casual breakfast, to a take-away to enjoy in the Park itself.”
