Wentworth Golf Club

Wentworth Golf Club has opened the doors to its brand new clubhouse following an investment by the club’s owners, Reignwood.

The renovation of the 19th century building was completed over an eight month period and was undertaken by rpa:group  and Garenne Interiors. The new clubhouse was completed in time for the start of the European Tour’s flagship event and Rolex Series opener, the BMW PGA Championship.

With an internal ground floor area of 3,500m2, including a ballroom, kitchen, bar and lounge area, work included a full strip-out and refurbishment of the space with new lighting, flooring, ventilation and extensive layout realignment.  The rpa:group’s Project Management and Architectural division were commissioned to develop and manage the design implementation on site, providing production information, construction detailing and on-site support.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality magazine about the project, Associate Project Manager at rpa:group, James Williams said: “We essentially had to strip out the whole site and start from the bottom and work up. It was challenging to try to maintain the heritage of the space and the history around that, whilst enhancing it with a newer and fresher feel. Reignwood wanted to do the project during their quiet season, so in the winter months when it is typically less busy. We made sure we had a temporary clubhouse on site whilst the work was undertaken.”

Italian marble has been used across the bars and bathrooms, with soft carpets carefully crafted in China. The men’s and ladies’ locker rooms have received particular attention with new sauna and steam rooms and a complete style overhaul undertaken. The new Pro Shop is a departure from traditional club shops with a boutique style experience, showcasing collections curated with leading equipment and apparent retailers. A new Hall of Fame houses the clubs vast collection of historical memorabilia, all reframed and refurbished, including a famous image of The Ryder Cup which hangs proudly in the Club Lounge.

An enhanced selection of dining options is also available to members including:

  • The Dining Room: A stunning space in a grand and elegant style, accompanied with a formal service. The room boasts a mirrored ceiling featuring an overhanging central banquette.
  • The Club Lounge: An elegantly designed space for morning coffee, afternoon tea and post-dinner drinks. Inspired by a classic country house drawing room, the dĂ©cor includes bronze cladded columns and stained-glass mirrors.
  • The Club Bar: The Club Bar is an ‘Art Deco’ inspired bar which is located at the end of the Club Lounge.
  • The Burma Bar: This is the bar that forms the heart of the Club’s social scene for its members.
  • The Conservatory: An all-day dining brasserie style space celebrating the great British kitchen.

Members can also utilise two new private dining rooms – the East Room and the West Room – for private functions. Both rooms are modern in design, providing members with total privacy. Wentworth Club also has a dedicated wine Sommelier helping members and guests enjoy wine pairings from different regions. This has been inspired by Wentworth’s ‘in town’ property, Ten Trinity Square and its own Private Club.

The development of an enhanced health and fitness offering has also been undertaken as part of the development and includes a state-of-the-art gym and fully integrated approach to wellness through a spa offering.

James added: “One of the main challenges of the project was the mix between the programme we were delivering and the high-end level of quality and expectation of the client. We always had a deadline and that was never going to change, which was one of the primary reasons we had a heavy presence on site – it is not traditional to have an architectural manager on site every day but for us, it meant that we could ensure that decisions that were made, were right the first time. This meant that we didn’t have to go back and revisit things.”

Wentworth Golf Club was founded in 1922 and was the former home for the brother-in-law of the Duke of Wellington. In 2014 the club was sold to Beijing-based Reignwood investment for ÂŁ135 million. Wentworth Club is best known for its association with professional golf. It has three eighteen-hole courses and a nine-hole par-3 executive course.

“I think there was a general nervous feeling as to whether the members would like it or not,” said James. “However, from the minute people walked in, they were all taken aback due to the level of work and the high-quality that has gone into it. Overall I think it is very popular and generally from the look and feel of things, feedback has been very positive.

“For me this project has been fantastic and is also a prestigious one for us as a company. Everyone knows what Wentworth is and the esteemed golfing heritage that it stands for,  so it is fantastic to be able to say that we have been heavily involved with its refurbishment and have been a key driving force to its success.”
