Parish of St Helier Recycling Depot

The Parish of St Helier Recycling Depot project is currently under construction in St Helier and comprises the erection of a single-storey building with associated offices and storage areas. Work began on the project in July 2012 with AC Mauger as the main contractor and the Parish of St Helier providing all architectural services on the scheme.

The new building is being built from a steel frame construction with blockwork and associated cladding and includes a mezzanine floor around certain sections of the structure. Roller shutter doors are also being incorporated into the building to allow vehicular access.

The recycling depot is a brand new facility for the local area and the site is being divided into bays to accommodate a range of materials for recycling. In addition, the site will also incorporate rainwater harvesting systems which will collect and reuse water.

Currently the building has been made wind and water tight and the fit-out works are underway.

Commenting on the environmental importance of the project, AC Mauger Construction Manager, James Joseph, said:

“The Parish of St Helier is the backbone of Jersey, so for us it is very important to be involved with a project such as this new recycling depot. The facility will mean a great deal to the island as it will create a much bigger recycling facility than the island has seen before and in keeping with the nature of the scheme we are completing our work in a very green way.

“Part of AC Mauger’s construction policy is to manage all waste on a project effectively, to ensure that all by-products are recycled responsibly. We currently have waste skips on this site and we are placing separate materials into the relevant skips so that they can be recycled. Where possible we will reuse as many of these materials as possible on this project.”

Style Group Chief Executive, Andy Fleet added:

“We have built our group on strong foundations providing exceptional service to our clients since 1947. While our focus is on surpassing our clients’ requirements, we believe strongly that this should not be at the expense of the environment.

“Within the group our aim is to provide effective environmental awareness and controls, seeking to continually improve all aspects of our environmental performance, as far as economically feasible. Our policy forms the basis for setting environmental objectives that will continually improve the manner in which we operate.”

The Parish of St Helier Recycling Depot project is currently scheduled to reach completion in February 2013.

Lakeside Manor Care Home

The Lakeside Manor Care Home project was implemented by Barchester Healthcare – one of the UK’s leading private healthcare providers – with AC Mauger on board as the main contractor. The project was designed by Robert Adam who worked in partnership with local architect Rob Williams of JS Livingston Architectural Services.

The project comprised the construction of three adjoining buildings – a north pavilion, a south pavilion and the main building – to house 60 en-suite rooms. The project also included the installation of specialist fixtures and fittings, including assisted baths, sluice rooms and lifeskills kitchens.

In addition some hard landscaping work also took place on the project, which included the installation of associated roads, path and driveways, block-paved car parks and terraces, along with soft landscaping work which included the installation of a sensory garden – complete with a summer house – and a bloomed flowerbed.

All soft landscaping work on the project was designed by Michael Felton and completed by AC Mauger in association with Augrés Landscaping.

Within weeks of Lakeside Manor’s grand opening, the States of Jersey Health Department had chosen Lakeside to provide specialist dementia care to islanders relying on the public health system. This decision has set the Island on a new path which incorporates a greater public private partnership to meet the requirements of Jersey’s ageing population.

As well as providing important treatment and care for residents living with dementia, Lakeside Manor is also complemented by neighbouring Lakeside Residential Home which is located at the same site – Rue de la Commune in St Peter. To date Lakeside Manor is the largest health facility for Barchester Healthcare.

Lakeside Manor Care Home General Manager, Rosie Goulding, said:

“With a rapidly ageing population, Jersey needs to look to the private sector for provision of long-term health care and we look forward to helping the States of Jersey deliver the levels of provision that the public expert.”

Work began on the Lakeside Manor project in autumn 2010 and reached completion in March 2012. To facilitate the construction of Lakeside Manor the project was divided into five phases, beginning with the erection of the north pavilion and followed by a three-phased construction of the main building and the construction of the south pavilion.

The south pavilion was originally planned to be the concluding phase of the project however this element of the scheme was brought forward and was completed 16 weeks ahead of schedule. The alteration to the scheme resulted in the re-programming of the entire project and saw landscaping work completed four months prior to the project’s scheduled completion date.

Style Group Chief Executive, Andy Fleet, said:

“Building Lakeside Manor was more than just a construction project. Everyone involved on the project understood that we were building a hugely important part of Jersey’s healthcare infrastructure and we were proud to do so. Having seen Lakeside so well received by residents and the public alike has really brought home the importance of the project we undertook.

“Lakeside Manor was an extremely complex project that was altered by the client once construction had begun. At all times, AC Mauger focused on delivering for the client and we knew the best way to achieve this was through excellent coordination of sub-contractors and close liaison with the client and the design team. I’m extremely proud of the way we succeeded in this because it transformed a very complex project into a very achievable project.”
