Chooks

Chooks Restuarant- Muswell Hill, London

Situated in Muswell Hill, London, Chooks is a brand new restaurant which serves freshly grilled chicken, a selection of subs, delicious salads and a collection of beers, wines and frozen margaritas.

Chooks opened in September 2012 and was conceived by Gideon Joffe, the creative mind behind Chez Bob and Monkeynuts in London.

Chooks is a 150 sq metre site, split across two-storeys. Work began on the four-week project in August 2012, with Interiors UK as the main contractor, Central Design Studio as the interior designers and Amdon as the electrical contractor.

Award-winning brand design agency, Mystery created the graphics, signage and printed material for the site. Mystery has been a leading name in food and drinks branding for over 13 years and was heavily involved in the creative process of the site.

Throughout the course of the £300,000 project to create Chooks, key materials used included reclaimed timber for floors and ceilings, and specialist glazed tiles. During work on the site the existing walls were stripped back to expose the original brickwork and these were then decked out in striking neon artwork.

Furniture for the site was sourced from a number of vintage furniture shops and markets in North London, whilst table tops were finished with bespoke laminates based upon retro designs.

To complete the project the kitchen also underwent a slight modification to accommodate new equipment.

Central Design Studio Director, Ian Haigh, said:

“Throughout the design of the project we tried to get into the mindset of an entrepreneur. We asked ourselves, if this was our first restaurant how would we approach this site? We decided that we would reuse certain aspects of the existing site and tweak different elements.

“Prior to work taking place on the project the site housed a branch of the Italian restaurant ASK, so some of the existing elements of the site were retained during the transformation process. An example of this was the existing facia, which we cut up and turned into tiles. We then had illustrator Jon Powell create some hand drawn designs on the tiles to create an organic approach to the design scheme. Our other key inspiration was 1950s-style Americana.”

Ian added:

“A project like this is very much our forte. We specialise in leisure, hospitality and high-end residential interior design work. Most of the work that we conduct is in the restaurant sector and this is something which I have been heavily involved with throughout my career, having previously worked at David Collins, United Designers, and Martin Brudnizki.

“Central Design Studio is quite a young company, however in less than two years we have completed projects for Chris and Jeff Galvin, Hilton Hotels, and Jamie Oliver.

“This is the first time that we have worked with Gideon but from our first meeting with him we could tell that he was in this line of business for all the correct reasons. He had a great vision of what he wanted the Chooks brand to be and from that moment onwards we knew that this would be an exciting project to be a part of.”
