Redeveloping St Bernard’s Hospital

Located in Southall, West London, St Bernard’s Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment.

Work being conducted on the site – situated next door to Ealing Hospital – will modernise facilities and improve patient care. The redevelopment includes upgrading the site’s infrastructure, along with the installation of new, well constructed buildings to ensure that the hospital provides the best services possible.

The project is being implemented by West London Mental Health NHS Trust. A planning application for an 80 bed medium secure unit (MSU) in the south east corner of the site was approved in April 2012. Work for this section of the project is currently scheduled to reach completion on the site in spring 2015.

One aspect of the St Bernard’s Hospital project nearing completion is a scheme to refurbish the Hospital’s Block B, costing just under £3 million. Carrying out this work means the Trust can make the best use of its assets and provide additional accommodation for clinical services.

Once completed in March 2013, Block B will be made up of four, fully refurbished inpatient wards providing space and accommodation for the patients and services currently located in the MSU construction area.

T & B Contractors is the main contractor on the St Bernard’s Block B project, whilst Feilden Mawson is providing architectural and design services on the site. Baqus Sworn King is the project cost consultant and URS is the civil and structural engineer, whilst MLM is the mechanical and electrical consultant.

Discussing the new MSU Programme Director, Vickie Holcroft, said:

“Medium secure services have been provided at St Bernard’s since 1986, if we are to continue the essential treatment and rehabilitation of these patients we must upgrade the site, doing nothing is no longer an option.

“Having assessed all the options available, it is clear that a new MSU will not only be the most suitable long term solution, but will also allow us to make the best use of our resources, whilst securing the future of many local jobs.”

West London Mental Health NHS Trust is one of the largest and diverse mental health services in the UK, providing care and treatment for approximately 20,000 people per year and serving a local population of around 700,000 residents.

The Trust employs around 4,000 members of staff across Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow and as well as community and inpatient mental health services, the Trust is a leading national provider of forensic and specialist mental healthcare.

In addition to work on St Bernard’s Hospital,  the Trust is also about to embark on an improvement scheme to redevelop Broadmoor Hospital and update the site to create a modern, safe and secure facility.
