Haymarket Station redeveloped

A £25 million project to give an Edinburgh train station an extensive makeover remains on track.

The Haymarket Station Redevelopment project is being undertaken to transform the Scottish station into a major transport interchange and marks the facility’s biggest change in its 170-year history. Once work is complete on the project, the newly improved station will provide an important train-tram link from 2014 onwards.

In addition, Haymarket Station will also be able to accommodate two new electric trains which will operate from the site in 2016. The new trains will provide additional services and promises to greatly reduce journey times between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Haymarket Station has been split into two phases in order to facilitate the extensive redevelopment. Phase One comprises the development of platforms and concourse levels, the creation of transport links and road crossings, the installation of a glazed roof and associated public realm works. Phase Two of the project comprises the creation of commercial and retail developments.

A council spokesperson, said:

“The existing facility is becoming strained, congested and inadequate, with pedestrians and passengers constantly competing for space. A regenerated station is essential to ensure that the city keeps moving effectively as it, as well as the Haymarket area, continues to expand.”

Prior to work taking place on the redevelopment of Haymarket Station, extensive public consultations were conducted, with 93% of respondents showing their support for the project. In addition, the transformation of the existing station will complement and enhance other developments in the Haymarket area.

Work began on the project in May 2012 and is scheduled to reach completion in late 2013. Integrated Design Partnership (IDP) is the architect on the Network Rail implemented project.

Network Rail runs, operates, maintains and continues to invest in Britain’s rail network, which includes approximately 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges, 8,200 commercial properties and more than 2,500 stations. Network Rail has operated Britain’s rail infrastructure since October 2002 and has since worked hard to restore public confidence in the railway network by reducing delays, keeping costs within budget and improving safety.
