Phase Three: Coplands Dock

Coplands Dock- Stromness

The final phase in the Three Port Strategy is Coplands Dock, a brand new 100 metre pier currently under construction in Stromness.

Following the success of the first two phases in the project, the third phase continues to make great progress and once complete will draw the impressive port strategy to a satisfying conclusion.

Coplands Dock is located at Stromness, the second town in Orkney. Stromness has a long history with sailing ships travelling across the Atlantic so this is another site with a great deal of significance.

Commenting on the Coplands Dock project, Peter Bevan, Orkney Islands Council, said:

“Coplands Dock is a brand new pier in Stromness. The contract started in August 2012, with an access road being constructed in September. Work began on the pier in January 2013 and is currently on schedule to reach completion in February 2014 – so it is a particularly tight programme.

“Coplands Dock is very accessible for the European Marine Energy Centre wave test site at Billia Croo and is ideally situated for potential projects to the west of Orkney. This is the most sheltered harbour in Orkney, is the traditional mainland route for ferries and is convenient for connections to Lyness, the first of the three ports in the Three Port Strategy.”

BAM Nuttall is the main contractor on Coplands Dock. BAM Nuttall is an experienced construction provider of engineering solutions for an array of projects, from rail, roads and maritime, to water and land remediation.

Orkney Island Council Vice Convenor, Jim Foubister, commented:

“BAM Nuttall is already well ahead on this project and they are hoping to have the work completed two months ahead of schedule, which is fantastic news and a good clear sign of their commitment to this project.”

Jim added:

“Orkney Island Council is responsible for an internal ferry fleet, consisting of nine ferries, but in total we are also responsible for 29 slipways and harbours. All of the phases within the Three Port Strategy are important to us and we look forward to seeing the work at Coplands Dock reach a conclusion.”
