Beast feast

Beast, Chapel Place, London

Tucked away on Chapel Place in London, Beast is a brand new venture from leading restaurant specialists the Goodman Restaurant Group.

The restaurant brings something different to the capital city and is already proving very popular with guests and cuisine connoisseurs alike.

Beast opened its doors on May 6th 2014 and serves up a tempting menu of the finest available king crab from the Norwegian Arctic Circle and 2 kilo cuts of steak. There is also a tasty selection of starters, sides and desserts, however like Goodman’s appropriately named sister restaurants, Burger & Lobster, this is a simple offering.

The fine dining concept is innovative and, as far as we know, unique. The restaurant is tucked away behind an unmarked black door, creating an atmosphere of exclusivity.

UK-based award winning practice designLSM were the interior designers for Beast. designLSM offer interior design, architecture and branding services for restaurants, bars, hotels, retail and residential properties and also work with the Goodman Restaurant Group on their Goodman Restaurants and Burger & Lobster brands.

Keen to find out a little more about the new restaurant, Premier Hospitality spoke to designLSM Associate, Andrew Harwood, to find out what makes Beast.

Andrew said:

“Communal dining is easily the most unique aspect of the restaurant interior. This is a place to enjoy a feast with friends. Our interior design for Beast takes influences from medieval banqueting halls and the huts used by the Norwegian fisherman who catch the king crabs the restaurant serves. In these huts communal meals were served at long tables seating all the local fishermen. Beast features six massive tables, each one a thick slab of oak measuring 6 metres in length. Long benches run the length of each table. Expertly made from green oak with scalloped seats, they create a raw and quite brutal effect, matching the simplicity and quality of the food offer. The interior is softened with rows of softly lit rustic candle chandeliers and ornate candelabras dotted along the tablescreating a warm glowing feasting hall.

Diners are surrounded by dramatically lit tanks housing the live king crabs, fridges with large cuts of steak, wine cellars and an open kitchen. The food is opulent and messy, so diners are invited to use the concrete hand basins piled high with napkins, scented soaps and lemon chunks.”

Andrew added:

“We started working on Beast last May. Beast works differently to most fine dining restaurants and no one else is serving this particular crab in London, so every aspect of this project was carefully planned and given the appropriate time to develop. The restaurant was installed within a brand new basement unit, so although our project team did not have to contend with any refurbishment or renovation issues, all work was very carefully considered to ensure the unique restaurant could operate as intended, especially as this is the first Beast to launch.

To date, the Goodman Restaurant Group has ten restaurants operating throughout London, which include three Goodman Restaurants – Mayfair, Canary Wharf and the city centre – as well as six Burger & Lobster sites and now Beast. Since the opening of the very first Goodman Restaurant, the Goodman Restaurant Group has built a reputation for providing diners with the best possible cuisine, in high quality surroundings.

At Goodman Restaurants, meat is dry-aged on site, within a temperature controlled, dehumidified environment to create the finest steak available. Meanwhile, Burger & Lobster presents a simple, yet enticing menu, which features whole live 1.5lb lobster from Nova Scotia or Maine; lobster rolls served in a brioche bun with Japanese mayonnaise; or a 10oz handmade burger in a brioche bun with chips and salad.

This latest restaurant in the Goodman Restaurant Group’s impressive collection of eateries continues designLSM’s excellent working relationship with the group, which continues to go from strength to strength.

Andrew finished by saying:

“To work on a new venture for the Goodman Restaurant Group is very exciting. We have worked with them on their Goodman restaurants, Burger & Lobster restaurants and now Beast, as well as the upcoming Lobster Roll. They are always looking at new ideas, instead of sticking to a roll out programme which they could quite easily do. They continuing to push boundaries and working with them is as challenging as it is rewarding.
