Abbey House, on the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in the Southern Lake District

The Abbey House Hotel is located on the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in the Southern Lake District.

Set in 14 acres of private woodland and gardens making it a perfect setting for weddings, holidays or short weekend breaks.

The recent redevelopment project of The Abbey House Hotel began in March 2013; with phase one having been completed in March this year. Phase one saw the refurbishment of the hotels bedrooms, as well as the restaurant, bar and lounge areas and function rooms.

The hotel, originally built and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1914 as the home and guest house of commander craven, is undergoing a £2.2million refurbishment, with phase two of the project, the redevelopment of the extension, set to begin in 2015.

Andy McCluskey, Design Director of APM Design said:

“The redevelopment was a big project and is going to be a fantastic addition to the community. We’ve seen a complete transformation in the hotel as it is now completely different to what it was before; it wasn’t just a case of painting the walls.”

The redevelopment has seen the opening of a new restaurant in the hotel; Oscars. The restaurant offers traditional brasserie food, with options from several European destinations. Breakfast is served until 12 noon, allowing guests to have a little extra time in bed, menu offerings include eggs benedict, eggs Florentine, corned beef hash and steak and eggs. Lunch and dinner offerings include an array of sandwiches, light bites, steaks and larger meals finished off with a filling dessert menu, boasting the likes of sticky toffee pudding, steamed ginger pudding and a Cumbrian cheese board.

The Abbey House Hotel is an ideal venue for weddings and conferences. Three times winner of the ‘Best wedding venue in Cumbria’ and winner of ‘Hotel of the year’ the function areas are suitable for any size event. The hotel grounds offer a beautiful backdrop for wedding photographs and the new refurbishments to the interior make a stunning venue for a civil ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception.

Andy McCluskey added:

“When you’re designing somewhere that’s used as a wedding venue, you have to be careful that you don’t create something which is going to upset the wedding party as it does not fit in with their colour scheme. You have to go with something quite neutral, whilst not letting it be boring; that was quite a challenge for our design team.”

Designing the hotel, APM Design amalgamated luxurious finishes and bespoke adornments. The hotel houses 61 bedrooms; standard double, deluxe double, single bedrooms, family rooms, bridal and honeymoon suites and disabled access bedrooms.

Andy said:

“The hotel boasts a lot of unique features, we put in bespoke light shades and floor coverings, and all of the carpets were designed and made as individual pieces especially for the hotel.”

The Abbey House Hotel is ideally located at the southern tip of the south lakes. The surrounding area is ideal for long walks, as well as holding several tourist attractions. Cumbria is home to Holker Hall, the Docks Museum, the Lakes Aquarium, Go-Karting and South Lakes Wild Animal Park.
