Founded in 1972, the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) was established as the UK’s representative trade association for the landscaping sector.

With a vision to continuously raise standards across the industry, BALI ensure a commitment to providing professional and quality services. The association prides itself on bringing together landscape professionals, promoting and inspiring members to take charge in their business and ultimately be top leaders of an ethically, environmentally and commercially sustainable landscape industry.

Technical, promotional and business support is offered to the landscape professionals that are members of BALI. The association has a strategy which involves identifying the particular needs of individual members in terms of business and training; and tending to these by developing a set of services that meet these members’ requirements. From here BALI promises to promote members to their established and potential markets, and work with the legislative and regulatory bodies to protect and advance members’ interests.

A spokesperson for BALI, said:

When BALI members sign up to our Code of Conduct they are pledging to carry out their business to the very highest industry standards. This means investing in staff training and skills development, adhering to health and safety regulations, considering the environmental and ethical implications of what they do, and running their operations with honesty and integrity. By choosing a BALI professional to design and build your garden, maintain your grounds, or supply your ethically sourced natural stone paving, you can be assured of professional excellence, value for money, and outstanding customer service.”

From time to time, even with the best intentions problems can occur, but as a forward-thinking organisation BALI has the right departments in place to deal with situations, should they occur.

The spokesperson said:

BALI’s Dispute Resolution Service is there for the protection of the client and contractor, helping to improve communication when a dispute arises by mediating between parties. On the very rare occasions when mediation is unsuccessful BALI will assist in organising independent third party professional adjudication.”

BALI supports Perennial and the BALI Chalk fund, two industry charities that inspiringly exist exclusively to support those working within the landscape industry. In memory of BALI founder member Geoffrey Chalk, the Chalk Fund was established in the mid 1970’s and provides bursaries for skills development. To date the BALI Chalk Fund has assisted in the development of industry training materials, awarded travel scholarships to enable young landscapers to learn from their counterparts overseas; and supported land-based colleges by providing trophies for exceptional achievement to students on landscape-related courses.
