The Nags Head, Cheshire hamlet of Haughton Moss

Situated in the Cheshire hamlet of Haughton Moss, The Nag’s Head has been a fixture of the local area since its creation in 1629.

Starting life as a local smithy and inn, the Grade II Listed building boasts Victorian tiled floors and 17th Century beams and is the perfect example of showcasing history in modern times.

In June 2014, Lancashire-based premium pub group Ribble Valley Inns took over The Nag’s Head in order to transform the building into a brand new pub-dining experience. Founded by Nigel Haworth and Craig Bancroft of Lancashire restaurant Northcote, Ribble Valley Inns is a small, yet perfectly formed group with an impressive portfolio of sites. The pubs have all been refurbished, and will continue to expand into Cheshire due to the recent investment by Chairman Richard Matthewman and his wife Lynda.

The opening of the pub marks the first time that Ribble Valley Inns have taken over a venue in Cheshire but it is one that is already proving to be a fantastic starting point for the group. Nigel Haworth is overseeing the kitchen menu with head Chef Michael Emminson.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality about the arrival of the new-look The Nag’s Head, CEO of Ribble Valley Inns, Wayne Chapman, said:

“We knew that we wanted to move into Cheshire. We drew up a list of locations that we had in mind based on the right demographics and areas we wanted to move into, and then found the correct site for us. We like to find true destination pubs, so The Nag’s Head was ideal as it fits into our company profile perfectly. This is a beautifully old building, which has been sympathetically restored so that it captures our unique footprint, but maintains its own individual character.”

Wayne added:

“It is fantastic to have Nigel develop the menu and as he has a great track record of dealing with local suppliers, he has been able to transfer the model he has established in Lancashire over to Cheshire.”

The Nag’s Head was restored by main contractor Bridgwater Contracts who carefully and sensitively restored the building in order to give it a new lease of life whilst maintaining its unique history and character. During the refurbishment works, Bridgwater Contracts carefully redesigned all the rooms in the building, working in partnership with Chester-based designers Lister Carter.

Wayne said:

“We have worked with Lister Carter on one previous scheme and following their work on The Nag’s Head, we have engaged them on two additional schemes – they are our preferred designer.”

As quintessentially English as a pub can be, The Nag’s Head represents everything that a fine Cheshire pub should be, offering good food, great service and a fantastic and extensive selection of drinks. The Nag’s Head has room for up to 150 covers inside – with additional dining space outside – and with a bowling green, kitchen garden, horse bays and even stocks, The Nag’s Head is perfect for a good old fashioned British summer.

Should the summer prove less than spectacular however, The Nag’s Head will continue to win over the punters with its great choice of cocktails and hearty meals. In addition, four open log fires will provide comfort and warmth as customers tuck into some tasty treats during the colder months of the year.

Northern celebrity chef Nigel Haworth is best known for his mastery of Lancashire produce and dishes – his cooking at the acclaimed Ribble Valley-based restaurant Northcote has earned him a Michelin star, one that he has held since 1995. Nigel has brought his unique talent to The Nag’s Head’s mouth-watering menu, which includes locally inspired dishes which are complimented by a stunning wine list curated personally by Master Innholder and MD of Northcote, Craig Bancroft.

The Nag’s Head menu is the result of Nigel’s exploration of the ‘Cheshire Kitchen’ working in conjunction with the pub’s Head Chef, Michael Eminson. Most of the produce is sourced locally, with some ingredients even coming from the pub’s own kitchen garden.

Nigel said:

“I’m over the moon that we’re now open in Cheshire. It’s been a fascinating journey for me – I’ve discovered some amazing new producers who I’ve never worked with before, which has led to an authentic menu that I’m really excited about. I love the pub itself too – this is the oldest one that we have in the collection and the bowling green, stocks and horse bays I think all add to a really unique atmosphere.”

Nigel added:

“I love discovering new food producers and working with local suppliers. When those that are so close to the restaurant also happen to be outstanding, that’s a real gift. I’m really pleased with this menu and I hope the locals and visitors are as happy with it as I am.”
