A project to construct 2,500 houses at the Poundbury Development Site in Dorchester is progressing well with the South West Quadrant of the site having recently received an NHBC Pride in the Job award.

The Poundbury project initially began in 1993, but works commenced on the award winning section of the site in 2010 and were completed by June 2014.

Premier Construction caught up with Project Manager of the South West Quadrant, Steve Walker, from C G Fry & Sons Ltd to find out more about the development. The site was split between C G Fry & Sons Ltd and Morrish Builders so each developer had 100 units to build. Both teams followed The Duchy of Cornwall’s site plans, as the whole site is Duchy owned, and worked side by side to create a mixture of social and private properties.

The site was previously agricultural land and so the onsite team did not need to undertake any demolition, especially as most of the South West Quadrant had already been raised and piled foundations installed. The 100 units which C G Fry & Sons constructed were a mixture of social and private residences, as well as combining flats, and one, two, three, four and five bedroom properties.

Steve Walker said a number of materials were utilised during the construction project. He added:

“We used Purbeck local stone, brick and render, as well as using slate and tile – Roman and plain – on the roofs. All of the windows are wooden on every house and we also used reconstituted stone for the properties exterior detailing.

“There are no standard house layouts on our section of the site as each house and terrace is individually designed.”

Most of the houses were bought upon completion; however Steve said that now, as the economic situation shifts, buyers are purchasing more off plan.

The completion of the South West Quadrant marks the half way point of the entire Poundbury project.

With regards to receiving the NHBC award for his work on the South West Quadrant at Poundbury Steve said:

“The award is a great recognition for all our hard work as a team and shows that we are achieving a high standard of quality for our clients.

“The award also acts as a great motivator to spur us on in the future; we hope to continue producing houses of this quality in the future and aim to be recognised again.”
