Welcome to the latest edition of Premier Construction magazine. In this month’s Premier Construction we take a look at two wind farm projects for DONG Energy; we head to the Midlands to celebrate the recent success of the Library of Birmingham; and we take a walk through Alexandra Park.
Two recent projects for DONG Energy include the West of Duddon Sands project – which is a 50/50 joint venture between DONG Energy and ScottishPower Renewables – and the Westermost Rough project – a joint venture between DONG Energy (50%), Marubeni Corporation (25%) and the UK Green Investment Bank (25%). Together the two wind farms represent more than 500MW of green electricity which will be added to the UK Grid. In this issue we take a look at the important milestones that both projects have reached as they provide the UK with more renewable energy.
Meanwhile, the multi-award-winning new Library of Birmingham building – the largest public library in Europe – is the city’s newest icon, receiving accolade after accolade, 12 months after its completion. The£188m library has won a RIBA National award in addition to being crowned RIBA West Midlands Building of the Year, as well as being successful in two special categories, with Birmingham City Council named as Client of the Year for the Library project and Patrick Arends of architects Mecanoo named Emerging Architect of the Year. In addition, the library’s construction partner, Carillion, was awarded the 2014 Considerate Constructors award.
Mr Brian Gambles, Assistant Director – Culture at Birmingham Library told Premier Construction:
“We have just celebrated an amazing first year after the building was opened in September 2013 with 2.7 million visitors. And this at a time when people are questioning whether a library is still relevant today – well I think we have answered that one pretty conclusively!”
And finally, an extensive multi-million pound refurbishment bringing massive improvements has transformed the historic Alexandra Park in Whalley Range, restoring key features to their former Victorian glory. Over£5 million was invested to bring much needed physical improvements to the community facilities and landscape, making it a park fit for the 21st Century.
