Rising an impressive 20 storeys into the London skyline with double height two storey basement beneath, the prestigious new five star 269 bedroom hotel M by Montcalm is the latest addition to the regenerated Shoreditch area.
Due to be completed in February 2015, the hotel will feature bars, state-of-the art business facilities, a Club Lounge, a wellness centre and gym, a selection of restaurants, a private members club – The Hoxton Social – and a rooftop bar, The Sky Lounge which offers stunning views across this buzzing quarter of London.
Fittingly for a hotel in London’s “Tech City” neighbourhood, the bedrooms offer the latest in technology: all rooms and suites are controlled via an in-room control panel, from which guests will be able to remotely adjust lights to suit their mood, monitor room temperature, control curtains and order room service, all with the click of a button. Wall-mounted plasma screens will double as mirrors.
The design and build project is being undertaken by SGP Contracts Ltd, who are building themselves a reputation for developing an innovative approach to challenging and complex projects.
The external elevation of the building features a mixture of clear, translucent and opaque glazed facade units. The decorative glazing is a combination of patterned, fritted glass, which creates a rich textured façade quite unique and without comparison in the London Area.
The unique design and challenging location provided for a number of logistical and technical hurdles for the project team to overcome. Not least the close proximity of the basement piling and excavation works being within a few meters of the London Underground tunnel network. The project was also located opposite the world renowned Moorfield Eye Hospital, which imposed further restrictions with regard to noise and vibration, due to the delicate eye laser surgery being undertaken on a daily basis. Furthermore the 6 metre high by 2 metre wide glazed facade units provided for challenging installation, as they could only be installed in wind speeds below 18mph.
