The construction of Sid Valley Practice Stowford Lodge is progressing well and is on track to complete in May this year.

The site previously held a derelict NHS-owned medical centre which has been demolished and replaced with a state of the art, two storey medical centre.

The project has been commissioned by Sid Valley Practice who currently operates another Sidmouth Medical Centre, in Devon. Premier Construction, keen to find out more about the project, caught up with Darryl Mitchard, Director of project main contractors Melhuish & Saunders, to get to grips with the ongoing works. Darryl commented:
“The project was put out for tender by GVA Grimley, the project managers and architects who are overseeing the scheme for the clients, and we won the contract. Works began on site in June 2014 and are due to complete by the end of May 2015.

“As part of the project the old building has been demolished, the site was cleared, new foundations laid and the new building has been erected. The structure is a standard traditional build with a block and beam ground floor and a pre-cast concrete slab first floor. We have rendered the buildings exterior, installed brickwork and constructed the new pharmacy which sits at the top end of the building.”

When completed the medical centre will comprise a large entrance and waiting area, a pharmacy, on screen self booking facilities, consulting, nursing, minor operations and outpatients rooms on the ground floor. The first floor will contain the staff room, admin areas and further consulting rooms.

The on site team are currently in the process of fixing the buildings roof into place and plastering the building. They are half way through the internal fit out, the first fix mechanical and electrical works are finished, as are the first fix carpentry works. The external renderings have been completed and the buildings flat roof is being completed.

Currently the team are completing the plaster boarding and plastering throughout the building and the second fix electrical works. The external works will begin shortly as will the internal decorative works, the fitting of the kitchen units and the furniture. The team will then finish the formation of the car park and entrance, install the path and the gravel and finally install all of the gas, electric and water services when the scaffolding has been brought down.

Darryl added:
“We did encounter a few difficulties on site as the existing foundations were very poor and so took a while to break out. Everything else has run smoothly so far apart from a few weather related issues. It has been great to be involved with the project as it is a high profile job.

“We gained this job after working with GVA Grimley on a previous medical centre project. As a result of the work we have done on other jobs we got recommended for this project and are proud to gain repeat business. We are lucky to do this job.

“We have worked with GVA Grimley for a number of years and we hope to work with them again after this project.”
