London Marriott Hotel

London Marriott Hotel Park Lane is undergoing an extensive refurbishment project covering all of the hotel’s five floors, public areas and luxurious bedroom suites.

The hotel’s transformation is being carried out in three phases which are set to complete in June this year.

The hotel’s redesign includes a revamp of the 152 bedrooms, the introduction of five new suites and a redesign of the lobby, Executive Lounge and meeting rooms. The refurbishment will also include the pool area and new rooftop terrace, with views over Oxford Street offering an urban oasis in time for summer.

Premier Hospitality caught up with Nicolas Kipper, the General Manager of London Marriott Hotel Park Lane, to find out more. He commented:

“The renovation is being undertaken in a three phase transformation which commenced in summer 2013. The first phase saw the re-design of the hotel’s restaurant, Lanes of London by Blacksheep, which launched in January 2014. RPW Design is responsible for the plans for the rest of the hotel.

“Phase two was finished in February 2015 which involved the renovation of the lobby, Executive Lounge and meeting rooms. The final phase extends to all bedrooms for which one floor will be closed at a time to minimise inconvenience to guests.”

The hotel is housed within a Grade II listed property designed by Francis Verity and therefore the onsite team kept this in mind throughout every phase of the renovation. The interior design reflects the elegance of Mayfair and respects the English Heritage historic building bringing an intimate feel and residential character into the hotel. The internal listed entrance area was used as design inspiration throughout the refurbishment

We caught up with Elizabeth Lane, Director of Projects, at RPW to find out more about the project. RPW acted as the interior designers for most of the renovation scheme, Elizabeth commented:

“RPW’s original brief was to help reposition the five-star hotel in the local market. Through the careful selection of quality materials and reworking of room layouts, RPW’s aim was to enhance the sense of luxury and increase the number of suites, making the hotel memorable to guests and the envy of its Park Lane hotelier neighbours.

“The new guestroom layouts all have entrance lobbies, thus improving the sense of arrival. The sense of space will be enhanced by a soft pastel colour palette of white, dove grey and shades of lavender. A counter style reception desk with two seated desks has been installed to allow for the delivery of a more personal service. The two sets of stairs leading from the main entrance to the reception area have been replaced with a single central stairway and additional informal, far more luxurious seating.”

RPW Design was established in 1988 and is one of the world’s leading hospitality interior design practices specialising in the creation of stunningly individual interiors. All of the firm’s projects are varied in context, function, ambition and budget, as well as being connected by coherence and an elegance resulting from a fully collaborative design process. RPW Design’s portfolio of experience includes The Royal Suite at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, London, The Infinity Suite at The Langham Hotel, London, and Hotel Okura, Amsterdam.

Once a stately apartment building overlooking Hyde Park and Marble Arch, the hotel now features an elegant and completely refurbished lobby area, as well as newly redesigned meeting spaces flooded with natural light. Immaculately designed rooms and suites boast luxury amenities including Floris products within the bathrooms, plush robes and deluxe beds with nightly turndown service. Italian book matched marble is used within the bathrooms, which had to be cut in large sections to allow for its precise pattern design.

Guests can also enjoy complimentary Internet service and access to the recently refurbished Executive Lounge. Diners can also sample classic British cuisine at the hotels signature restaurant, Lanes of London, and burn off their indulgences at the fitness centre and indoor pool afterwards, the only hotel pool on Park Lane.

A collection of predominantly British quality artwork and statement pieces have been curated and installed in each room throughout the hotel for a ‘wow factor.’ In charge of the artwork was acclaimed artist and curator, Peter Millard, whose attention to detail was employed so that guests would notice something different each time they visit the hotel.

Energy efficient lighting has also been installed as part of the renovation, as has efficient in-room heating.

General Manager of the hotel, Nicolas, explained that special consideration is being taken to keep noise levels to an absolute minimum and has been managed carefully to avoid guests being disturbed during their stay:

“The team decided to stay open during the project as they were confident that the refurbishment could be managed with minimal impact on guest stay. Revealing the hotel renovation in stages has kept guests excitement alive throughout the renovation.

“Any work that results in noise is conducted between midday and six in the evening when guests are most likely to be out of their rooms. This has proved to be a successful strategy.”

He added:

“This is a momentous time for London Marriott Hotel Park Lane, we are taking the hotel into the next chapter with a renovation that we are extremely proud of.  Having moved to the hotel in November, overseeing this major project and watching the transformation has been very rewarding for me. The response to the new designs has been hugely positive and very encouraging so far and we look forward to offering an elevated service and an enhanced in-room service to our loyal guests and new visitors.”
