Nestling in seven acres of beautiful Cornish countryside, overlooking the Camel Estuary and with an award-winning restaurant, the Pickwick Inn at St Issey, Burgois, Wadebridge, had everything – except guest rooms.

Now the Pickwick’s perfect offer is complete – with the addition of a superb new two storey extension, just completed and containing nine exclusive luxury en-suite bedrooms – all with sweeping, uninterrupted views across the stunning Camel Estuary – and each boasting a top of the range specification which even includes a flat screen TV in the bathroom!

Main Contractors for the project were Gynn Construction, who were described as having ‘done a wonderful job.’

Years in the planning, the extension was a dream which has now become reality for proprietors Eddy and Jenny Stanton, who have run the hotel for 34 years, now assisted by daughter Natalie Moore.

Constructed to the side of the original building on an empty site which was previously part of the Pickwick Inn’s former beer garden and bowling area, the extension includes three superior suites and six boutique double bedrooms – all with balconies.

All of the rooms are exceptionally spacious and have either super king or twin beds, large flat screen TV and en-suite bathroom with free standing bath, wet room style shower and another flat screen TV (yes – in the bathroom!). The superior suites are approximately one quarter larger than the boutique double bedrooms and also include a sofa, as well as having a larger bathroom, including a double shower.

External elevations of the building are in a combination of brick and stone, with a slate-hung frontage and high quality aluminium framed steel grey coloured windows

“Internally and externally, all of the building materials, fixtures, fittings and furniture are top quality. The rooms are really beautiful and the extension is the same height as the original building, so blends in well,” said Natalie Moore.

“Gynn Construction really have done a wonderful job – a real work of art. I has been such a swift process that we can hardly believe how quickly the extension has gone up,” she added.

“The new extension means that we can offer bedroom accommodation for the first time – which seemed a no-brainer for us, because this will allow for year-round trade, consistent full-time employment for our staff and will compliment the food offering in our award-winning restaurant. Most days we have had enquiries about accommodation from customers and now we are able to provide it.”

External works include decorative paving and the creation of an additional car parking area.

The project also included cutting out a section of the roof in the original building and the installation of a large glazed conservatory style section of ornate roofing to bring more light into the interior.

The Pickwick Inn, which also has a swimming pool and tennis court, is renowned for the quality of the food it serves. “We were a gastro-pub before the phrase was even coined and our head chef and manager has been with us for around 25 years. The menu is designed around local produce, including seafood – all teamed with fantastic sauces and complimented by award-winning desserts,” said Natalie.

“We already have bookings for the new bedrooms and the main selling point has been people coming here and seeing how beautiful the rooms are – people can hardly believe how high the specification is,” she added.

There will also be a second stage of development for the Pickwick Inn due to commence in September 2015 and comprising the construction of a 90-seater conservatory style restaurant with an open plan kitchen and sea views. The new restaurant will occupy part of the original bar area and will incorporate a new extended section which will be built out onto the original patio area.

The Pickwick Inn, part of which is over 200 years old, was originally two cottages which were merged into one. The remainder of the building was constructed in 1953.
