The Wheathill

Wheathill

Located in Bangor, Northern Ireland, The Wheathill is a new and exciting restaurant for those who want something a little extra from an affordable dining experience. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, diners can sit back and enjoy the seafront view, listen to good music and indulge in good food.

Owned by Amee and Cameron Carter, this restaurant has been the dream of the couple for many years.
Speaking to Premier Hospitality Magazine, Amee said: “We have been in the restaurant business our whole careers and we always said that we would open our own restaurant but it was about finding the right premises. Then we found the premises we are in now. It used to be a restaurant about 4-5 years ago and it always had a good reputation so we thought it would be a good location to open.”

The Wheathill offers diners a modern twist on traditional dishes using local produce. Those looking to eat at the restaurant can expect to find an original menu, sociable atmosphere and welcoming staff.

Amee added: “We try to use local ingredients were possible and everything is made fresh, in house where we can, with our menu changing on a daily basis, depending on what’s fresh and what is available at that time.”

The restaurant opened in December 2015 after Amee and Cameron were handed the keys on 4 November 2015.

“The restaurant is all on one level and is completely open,” said Amee. “The building is long and narrow with tables and chairs down either side. As soon as you come through the door there is a porch area because it is right on the sea front – the marina sits just across the road. We have built a seating area at the front using old pallet wood that we sanded down and painted grey and we have a large table at the front, which we got made from a piece of ash tree with a cast iron base on it from Cardy Timber, a local company.

“There is a bar at the bottom of the building which has cast iron wine racks attached, and presented around the top, we have a selection of our wines. The kitchen has an open pass leading off the bar, along with a long window for visibility for customers to enhance the open kitchen experience.”

Since its opening the restaurant has received rave reviews from critics and the general public.

Amee commented: “The feedback and support has been amazing. We got a good write up in the Belfast Telegraph in February and we were overwhelmed to receive the best newcomer award in County Down in the Irish restaurant awards.”

Now that the restaurant is a success, Amee and Cameron hope to continue this and make The Wheathill even better than what it set out to be.

Amee concluded: “This was a goal that we set and we feel that we have achieved it

and want to keep superseding it, setting higher goals and improving it and just making it better and better.”
