Castle Green Hotel in Kendal
Castle Green is Kendal’s only four star Hotel and rosette awarded Restaurant and is set in 14 acres of grounds overlooking Kendal Castle and the Lakeland Fells. The hotel boasts a dedicated conference & training centre for up to 300 delegates, two large function rooms ideal for weddings and events, 99 bedrooms, health and fitness club, spa, Alexander’s for traditional ales and bar meals and a ropes challenge course in the woods behind the property.
Featuring bright, contemporary décor, parts of the hotel have recently undergone refurbishment. As well as fresh designs and naturalistic finishes, the rooms offer en suite bathrooms, free wi-fi and flat screen TVs with satellite channels. Some upgraded rooms add balconies with garden views, four-poster beds and seating areas.
Liz Holcroft, Interior Design Director at Allison Pike Partnership spoke to Premier Hospitality about work undertaken at the hotel.
She said: “This phase of the project started on site in January 2016 and it involved the refurbishment of 33 bedrooms. As we had previously designed the refurbishment of the hotel’s Greenhouse restaurant, we were given a quite lot of freedom. The restaurant is rustic and contemporary but will stand the test of time, and that was the kind of thing we were after for the bedrooms, something that would flow through. The rooms had to appeal to the current Castle Green guests who already know and love the hotel and also capture the imagination of future guests to give it a broader appeal. Previously the rooms appeared a bit cramped and the hotel wanted them to be as spacious as possible, with the views out of the windows to be more of a focal point.”
Natural textures have been used in the new bedrooms including leather, felt and linen, inspired by the hotel’s rural location. The ceiling has also been lowered in the bedroom lobby area to maximise the design’s impact in the main part of the bedroom.
Liz added: “The bedroom ceilings were an expanse of large space and given a wood grained decorative finish to integrate them into the scheme. We also drew attention to the window area by adding a pendant light over the lounge table and chair and designing an ergonomic desk that would maximise the space in the seating area. We designed the case goods in walnut veneers with fuchsia and duck egg accents and carried these through every single room, but essentially we created three different room types by incorporating a digital wall covering behind the headboard of wild flower photography. There are three different images in different colours but they all work with the common colour scheme throughout the rooms.”
Work on this phase of the redevelopment was completed in March 2016.
Pete Crane, Maintenance Manager at Castle Green Hotel commented: “Everything ran to schedule but the biggest challenge was ensuring that the work was carried out with minimal impact on our guests and that we completed the project on time. Seeing this phase of work completed means that we now have a much improved product, keeping in line with our guest’s expectations and we can continue to move forward with what Castle Green has to offer.”
Liz added: “This project was an opportunity for Castle Green to evolve, it was great to be part of that creative process. They are a really nice team to work with and because they are an independent hotel with great managers they make it more of a pleasure to work alongside.”
