The Ocean Estate in Stepney Green has been shortlisted as a finalist in a national competition.

The £220 million regeneration programme, led by Tower Hamlets Council and partners East Thames Group, has been nominated ‘finalist’ in the ‘Best Regeneration Initiative category if this year’s ’Housebuilder magazine awards.

The Ocean Estate regeneration programme began in 2010 and has created more than 800 new homes (half of which are affordable), a shopping parade, a community centre and GP practice, landscaped gardens, roads, improved lighting, a ball court and two children’s play areas.

376 new trees and more than 7,000 new shrubs have also been planted.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said: “The Ocean Estate is an excellent example of development done right, delivering high quality housing for our residents and great environmental benefits.

“I am delighted that it is getting the recognition it deserves as one of the UK’s best regeneration initiatives.”

Statutory Deputy Mayor and cabinet member for Housing Management & Performance, Cllr Sirajul Islam, added: “Ocean Estate is probably one of the most ambitious regeneration projects that the council has undertaken and has proved a resounding success with locals. I’d like to wish East Thames Group every success in this year’s Housebuilder awards.”

The Ocean Estate regeneration programme has already won a number of industry awards including being named ‘Best new place to live’ in 2015 by the former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
