St. Georges Church Redeveloped

St. Georges Church

IDM Properties purchased St. Georges Church, a derelict church situated on the side of the River Thames in February 2014. IDM received planning permission to convert the church to produce nine houses, four flats and one maisonette.

IDM have been working with the planners and the London Diocesan Fund to carry out the scheme to produce 21 units within the already approved envelope of the building, including the Grade II listed Church Hall. The new application was approved by the committee in early 2015.

In order to discuss the redevelopment scheme, Premier Construction caught up with Jonathon Curtis, Partner at IDM Properties. Jonathon said:

“The aims for the redevelopment were to bring the former derelict church back into use after years of neglect and create a range of stunning new homes incorporating all possible features from the former church for buyers in the area.

“There has been a huge interest in the properties but we haven’t yet released the apartments for sale and won’t until we have the show flat ready, which will be in November this year.”

The construction began onsite in summer 2015 and developments are scheduled for completion in May 2017.

Jonathon commented:

“Neutral and simple colours will be used against the backdrop of the existing brick and stone arches, columns and features that are being retained within the church.

“We have had to exhume over 700 bodies from the site and laid them back to rest in Brookwood Cemetery after contacting local residents who could have been relatives. Then we have to make the existing stone structure work in parallel with the new concrete frame that has been cast within the existing envelope of the church – this is probably the most challenging aspect of the project.

“Church conversions allow us to produce unique contemporary apartments that have so much more character and interest than a normal new build apartment, so it’s fantastic for us to be able to work on the redevelopment at St. Georges Church.”

IDM

IDM is a property services operation which encompasses property investment, property development, property management, asset management and private finance.

With over 35 years’ experience in property development, IDM’s mission is to deliver excellent value to their customers by providing high quality developments in which people can work, live and play.

The establishment aims to bring above average return on investments for all stakeholders. This core objective is achieved through three divisions, each complementary to one another.

IDM considers purchasing and holding property as mid-long term property investments if they find something in the market that they believe to be below market value and a great investment. Alternatively they will hold the commercial element of property that they have developed.

The Development Department specialises in maximising the use of available space. IDM has a great vision about what can be achieved from small or unusual buildings to produce a valuable end product as well as being able to produce new build blocks of flats or mixed use buildings.

Not only are IDM working on St. Georges Church, they have also recently achieved planning and are about to undertake the conversion of the Grade II* Listed Hoover Building with work commencing in September 2016.
