This Month in Premier Construction 23.6

Welcome to the latest edition of Premier Construction magazine.

In this month’s edition, we take a look at the latest developments on the Mersey Gateway project; we catch up with Crossrail; and we pop into Barber Barber.

The Mersey Gateway Project is one of the largest infrastructure schemes currently being undertaken in the UK. Scheduled for completion in autumn 2017, the project will provide a new six-lane cable-stayed toll bridge over the River Mersey as well as a 9.2km road network connecting the new bridge to the main motorway network in the North West. Merseylink consortium was appointed to deliver the scheme and is responsible for the design, build, finance and operation of the bridge over the next 30 years.

Meanwhile, designed to transform rail transport across London, Crossrail is a £14.8bn project that covers 38 designated stations with the aim of increasing capacity, supporting regeneration and cutting journey times. Once completed in 2018, nine new stations will have been created as part of the project, including Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Woolwich and Custom House. Work started on Crossrail in May 2009 and once work is complete an additional 1.5 million people will be able to access key areas of the capital within just 45 minutes.

And finally, since first opening in Manchester three years ago, Barber Barber has quickly built a reputation for high quality male grooming in a distinctive environment. The brand has expanded quickly and in addition to Manchester now has stores in Liverpool, Leeds and London. In August a fifth shop, the biggest to date, opened in Birmingham’s bustling Bullring. Barber Barber Birmingham owner Johnny Shanahan said: “I honestly think Birmingham is one of the most underrated cities in the UK. I think it’s very cool, very clean and there’s plenty of money there. It was a no brainer for us. It was just about finding somewhere that was right.”

With all this and more, join us as we explore the impressive construction projects that continue to shape our landscape.
