Pizza goes punk in Glasgow – Pizza Punks

1-(12-of-114) d

An artisan and wood-fired pizza company with a difference, Pizza Punks has just opened a much-anticipated stylish new venue in Vincent Street, Glasgow.

Spread over ground and basement levels and totalling 650 mÂČ, the former Barclays Bank site has been transformed into a 160 cover restaurant with an open kitchen where diners can see their food being prepared.

The project, which involved the comprehensive refurbishment and conversion of the interior space, was carried out by Buildright Shopfitters, with Architecture and Design as interior designers. Mechanical and electrical consultants were Design ME and structural consultants were Woolgar Hunter.

The large open plan interior features high ceilings and furniture reminiscent of New York City interiors and urban pizza-houses, whilst low hanging lights and bare neon lit signs give it a minimalist look.

The venue includes 380mÂČ of ground floor restaurant dining space featuring a mix of fixed banquette seating, loose hard and soft seating and bar stools.

The works included a total internal strip out, the installation of complete new mechanical and electrical services internally and externally, and internal structural alterations.

Two new specialist pizza ovens were also installed and are surrounded by polished concrete bars with frontages in alternating herringbone tiling.

Further works included the provision of new loose furniture, new lighting installation and comprehensive re-decoration, with internal finishes including a palette of oak, steel, concrete, leather and brick.

Externally, new corten signage with neon lighting details was also installed.

The building’s Category A listed status meant there were restrictions on the amount of work which could be undertaken to the shop frontage.

During the works, the contractors were restricted to one vertical extraction line on the rear elevation of the building (rising some 9 floors/30 metres).

The philosophy of Pizza Punks is simple – they offer customers any pizza toppings they wish at no extra cost. In addition, their pizzas use the finest, freshest and unique ingredients from land, sea and market stall- and most of their menu items are made in-house from scratch – including sauces and doughs.

Toppings include an endless list of different types of cheeses, meats and mushrooms, as well as more unusual items such as chocolate pulled pork and lemon thyme roast chicken.

In addition, diners can expect wood-fired roasts, premium cured meats, a selection of cheeses, fresh breads and innovative breakfasts.

Desserts include plum, cinnamon crumble and vanilla, banana, Nutella and salt peanut caramel ice-cream.

Then there’s ‘Anarchy Ice Cream’ – one tub served with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, vanilla apple pie, chocolate brownie strawberry cheesecake, roasted coconut espresso, honeycomb, almond, raspberry, rosewater, pistachio lemon meringue pie glacĂ© cherries and a host of other delicious options.

There is also a full drinks list with wines on tap, hand-crafted cocktails, artisan coffee and – in a first for the city – tank beer.

The scheme to create the new venue commenced in July 2016 and was completed in September 2016.
