Swinton Park Country Club and Spa

Swinton Park

One of the largest privately owned estates in England, spanning 20,000 acres of North Yorkshire countryside, is set to add one more element to its bulging portfolio with the opening of a large spa and country club.

The Swinton Estate boasts camping, a variety of outdoor activities and a cookery school. At the heart of the Estate’s offering, however, is Swinton Park – a luxury castle hotel with 32 beautifully styled bedrooms and suites.

Opening in late spring this year, the multi-million pound Swinton Country Club and Spa will be the final piece of the jigsaw for the Estate as it looks to expand its appeal to resident and non-resident guests.

Felicity Cunliffe-Lister and husband Mark have owned the hotel since the turn of the century, with Mark also the heir to the Estate. Felicity spoke to Premier Hospitality about the decision to build the Country Club and Spa:

“This has been a long term development in the sense that we’ve been considering it for the best part of five years. We wanted to improve what we could offer to hotel resident guests but we also wanted to expand our offer to non-resident guests.

“Broadly speaking from the outset the aim has been to create a country club and spa. The design of the building has changed several times, mainly due to planning restrictions, but the overall idea has remained.

“We are building within the curtilage of a Grade II listed building and have had to accommodate everything that entails. Style, design and impact had to be worked through carefully which took time.”

When completed the Spa will be a hub of relaxation and wellbeing. It will boast both an 18-metre indoor pool and 10-metre natural water outdoor pool, saunas, steam rooms, hydrotherapy pools, a beauty cottage, gym and studio. A suite of treatment rooms and a suite of relaxation rooms will also be located on the first floor. Food in the Spa will focus on wellbeing and nutrition with a menu that reflects this.

The Country Club will comprise a brasserie, terrace garden, coffee shop and bar, private dining room and an estate shop that provides access to the gardens and parkland. The brasserie will incorporate some of the Spa elements but also serve a lighter, more relaxed style of dining. It will focus on fresh local ingredients, many of which will be sourced from the Estate’s gardens.

Regarding the Country Club design, Felicity added:

“For the Country Club we were influenced by the heritage of the building already in situ. The old estate workshops are now the bar and coffee shop so the design focuses on that. We’ve tried to make the new elements very distinct. It is being built within a walled garden and the design focuses on this setting.

“It brings together the hotel and the estate and ensures the long-term prosperity of the hotel. It will be a hub for both people just visiting the hotel for the day and guests on the estate.”

Swinton Park hotel has long been celebrated for its elegant rooms and fine dining, all set against a stunning backdrop. Guests are welcome to enjoy the warmth and individuality of the interior or explore the expansive parkland through activities such as shooting, fishing and pony trekking.

To further experience the Estate’s parkland, Swinton Bivouac offers glamour camping in secluded tree lodges or meadow yurts – perfect for families looking to get away from 21st century living and get in touch with nature.

Already a standout destination, not just in Yorkshire but the whole UK, Swinton Estate and its extensive portfolio has something for everyone – from relaxation to recreation.
