Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge

Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge has redesigned its ground floor into a visual feast for shoppers. Harvey Nichols launched the ‘Beauty Lounge’ in 2016 and has also gone on to launch a new accessories department that occupies the lion’s share of the floor.

Work on the Harvey Nichols Ground Floor redevelopment was undertaken by Portview Fit-Out and Virgile + Partners throughout 2015, concluding in 2016.

Speaking to Premier Retail magazine, Director of Virgile + Partners, Carlos Virgile said: “The design scheme is cutting edge and contemporary but with a twist and a sense of humour. It plays with the idea of a classic beauty ‘salon’ by integrating French style boisserie panelling but in this case mouldings are printed on plywood rather than sculptured, creating an exciting contrast with the combination of marbles and concrete tiles on the floor.”

The Harvey Nichols design structure includes bronze and mirror casing along the perimeter, framing the beauty brand areas and a hanging system similar to those found in art galleries, around all columns. All brands have a consistent white Corian slab and fixed dimensions in order to create a balanced and consistent structure within the beauty world. With this in mind, traditional brand canopies over the counters have been eliminated to create an impression of space and more air.

The Jewellery Room aims to be a representation of ‘new luxury’ avoiding the tramps of heavy looking jewellery departments and creating a contemporary and more architectural statement through simple displays and contrasting furniture. The ceiling finishes extend the polycarbonate surfaces of part of the beauty area but combine it with a long area of a perforated bronze metal band connecting both ends of this jewellery box. Parquet flooring and specially designed vintage looking rugs creates the backdrop for a combination of display furniture, sculpted counters and vintage freestanding cabinets combining white marble plinths and bronze metal cases.

Carlos added: “The perimeter houses a number of exciting jewellery brands within an effective branding framework that allows for a balanced insertion of identities. Lighting in general, as well as its integration to display cases, together with stylish seating has been carefully considered to reinforce the intimacy and elegance of this department.”

The project has recently been shortlisted for several Retail Week Interior Awards and has been shortlisted in the categories of Best Fashion Retail Interior, Best Lighting and Fixturing and Best POP/VM Solution.

The Retail Week Interior Awards celebrate the best in the retail design and fit-out sector. Celebrating its 20th anniversary these awards have continued to celebrate the creativity and innovation that the retail industry is renowned for. Winners of the awards will be announced on Thursday 2 November 2017, alongside the Retail Week Interiors Summit.
