Chain Locker

After completing a nine month, multi-million pound refurbishment, the iconic Chain Locker pub, restaurant and hotel in Falmouth is back in operation. The sensitive refurbishment has not only created a stylish and contemporary destination but it has also preserved the future of one of Falmouth’s oldest buildings.

Acquired by St Austell Brewery approximately two years ago, the Chain Locker now boasts three distinct elements suited to cater to a variety of needs. On the ground floor, the Chain Locker bar has been retained with its original look to maintain a link to the building’s past. The first floor, however, has been overhauled and restored to create a fully accessible restaurant and oyster bar with private dining rooms. On the second floor, six new boutique bedrooms have been added with stunning views out across Cornwall.

Working alongside Cardiff-based Design Management Partnership, who acted as architects, interior designers and project managers for the work, the new Chain Locker is a warm and inviting space. To find out more about the project, Premier Hospitality spoke to St Austell Brewery’s property manager Patrick Gribbin:

“The Chain Locker is a very iconic building and pub in the area and it is really well known to many people. When we bought the premises approximately two thirds of the building wasn’t being used by the previous occupants. The project has opened up the whole building so that it’s all useable.

“We’ve retained the historic feel that both the building and The Chain Locker has. The Chain Locker bar is very well known to locals and is decorated with paraphernalia from people’s travels around the world. While the work was being carried we put all the items safely into storage before bringing it back because we wanted to keep the bar particularly close to how it looked before.

“We’re really proud of the end result and what has been achieved. Initial feedback has been very positive and we had lots of people who were involved in the project at the launch. This was a hugely important project for St Austell. We have lots of similar sites location wise but having this type of property in Falmouth is very important to us.”

Despite a number of challenges that arose as work on the historic building developed, a strong working relationship between all parties involved meant the project remained on course and reached a satisfactory conclusion.

Blending traditional Cornish meals with award-winning St Austell Brewery ales, the Chain Locker is an all-day destination perfect for breaking up a busy day at the seaside. The six boutique bedrooms are contemporary and inviting with bold colours and vintage furnishings that contribute to a relaxing feel.
