La Tagliata – Elegant new ‘Italian’

La Tagliata – a new cocktail bar & Italian kitchen has opened at the corner of 45 Grafton Way/112 Whitfield Street to the applause of Fitzrovia – the area that houses London’s most creative, discerning diners. This venue is the second venture for Carlo Palumbo and Lorenzo Boldi – The proprietors of ‘La Tagliata Italian Kitchen’ In Spitalfields.

Maike Gruna of Maike Gruna Interiors was able to bring their vision to life with her acute insight and sense of timeless style, creating a game changing design brand for the future, La Tagliata’s restaurants.

The original Fitzrovia site comprising of 120 square meters was stripped and completely refurbished by Maike Gruna, lead designer with her seasoned and experienced team. The existing space has now been divided into two different areas consisting of a restaurant and a cocktail bar.

The initial brief was to create the warm ambience of La Tagliata in Spitalfields, but Maike has introduced a strong, new brand identity to this project with bespoke interior design elements, ultimately creating an elegant, understated restaurant and an opulent cocktail bar.

Maike explained that the existing space of the restaurant was long and narrow without a natural light source at the back of the space. In the design process she has created interesting, inviting seating areas.

Maike has introduced high-end materials into her scheme, fabric wallpapers, comprising of warm, understated colours and petrol grey chevron patterned tiles.

There are strategically placed antique mirrors. The entire space is highlighted by warm, glass pendants throughout. Maike’s clever design concept has increased the spatial dimensions with the imaginative use of a mirrors, especially on the back facia bordered either side by an arrangement of regimental wine bottles inset into a bespoke wooden shelf unit. This is offset by recessed, bronzed pendant lighting. The overall effect is of a balanced and functional restaurant that comfortably occupies the space with effortless ease.

Careful to not distract the diners in this delicious interior, the restaurant area now offers a mix of banquette seating arrangements, which adapt to smaller more intimate settings. Alternatively the tables can be moved together to accommodate large groups of people. Maike Gruna and her team have also allowed for a large round table incorporating the banquet seating for a more private dining experience for eight.

In contrast, Maike and her team deliberately created a different feel and look in the cocktail bar area. Her intention was to bring more glamour to the space, in keeping with the clientele situated in Fitzrovia’s trendy advertising district and with her confident use of design and flair she has succeeded.

The designer introduced bespoke, interior elements such as gold chevron patterned tiles and concrete tiles, black marble bar tops, smoky pendant lighting, gold and bronze patterned wallpaper alongside the existing brick stone walls. There are floor to ceiling wine shelf displays and petrol blue walls that showcase selective, changing art displays – all seamlessly woven together to great effect.

The external appearance has also been given a facelift to reflect the interior. The walls have been painted black to enhance the gold and bronze coloured interior fit out, framed by smart black awnings covering an outdoor seating and dining area bordered by planters, giving the appearance of an inviting, stylish restaurant.

Maike Gruna Interiors has a strong background in designing high-end residential and development projects; latterly incorporating hospitality into the extensive portfolio of successful completed projects. They are based in London but have undertaken work here and internationally.

Maike’s final words: “We have really enjoyed working on this restaurant and bar scheme. Particularly as the client was inspired and involved and was able to make quick decisions. The client and investors are delighted with the completed scheme and the new brand design we have been able to create.

“We feel the La Tagliata concept in Fitzrovia is a go-to destination for authentic food and amazing pizza with the taste of Italian good wine housed in an elegant, ambient interior, incorporating a decorated cocktail bar, offering around 30 different Italian cocktails with a variety of small ‘La Tagliata’ signature dishes to nibble on.”
