This Month in Rail Construction News 2.9

Welcome to the latest edition of Rail Construction News – the premier construction tool for the rail industry.

In this month’s edition of Rail Construction News, we cast our eyes over the Follo Line project; we check in with the Waterloo Line project; and we catch up with Ordsall Chord.

The Follo Line Project is currently the largest transport project in Norway and will include the longest railway tunnel in the Nordic countries. The new double track rail line forms the core part of the InterCity development southwards from the capital. The Follo Line Tunnel will be Norway’s first long twin tube rail tunnel and one of the first to be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines. The main construction started in 2015 with completion set for December 2021.

Meanwhile, there are more than 230 million passenger journeys on the railway to and from London Waterloo every year – an increase of over 100% in the past 20 years. It is therefore the responsibility of Network Rail to make sure that while capacity increases, the passenger experience increases too. To help achieve this, Network Rail is currently overseeing an £800 million investment programme to improve and increase the capacity of London Waterloo.

And finally, the Manchester studio of BDP has played a key part in the hugely significant civil engineering rail project the Ordsall Chord, which completed on 9th November. The Ordsall Chord line is 300m of track and a series of new bridges and viaducts designed by BDP in collaboration with engineers from Parsons Brinkerhoff, Aecom and Mott MacDonald. The new rail link will connect Manchester’s Piccadilly and Victoria rail stations for the first time and unlock new routes and improve connections and journey times across the north of England.

With all this and much more inside, please join us as we explore the projects which continue to shape our nation’s railways.
