Beatrix Potter hotel unveils £1 million refurbishment

Lindeth Howe – the world’s only hotel ever owned by Beatrix Potter – has unveiled a £1 million investment, including new bold décor, a unique ‘tea room’ for conferences and weddings and total refurbishment of its downstairs lounges and bar area.

Built in 1879, Lindeth House was owned by Beatrix Potter for almost 20 years in the early 20th century and retains strong links with the globally renowned writer and artist. Now, as its current owners celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2018, they have unveiled a striking new look for the hotel aimed at broadening its appeal to visitors.

As well as creating a vibrant new space for events, conferences and – for the first time – weddings, Lindeth Howe has also dropped ‘country house’ from its title in a bid to change outdated perceptions about the 34-bedroom hotel.

The new tea room is bursting with bright colours and nature-inspired furnishings, creatively led by interior designers Stylise Design. Undertaking a three-month project to conceive a bespoke carpet, Stylise Design have focussed on every detail, sourcing unique FF&E items and furniture at their Cheshire-based workshop. Meanwhile, renewed investment in Lindeth Howe’s bedrooms feature hand-made wardrobes created by Cumbrian craftsman Ryan Blackburn.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality about the refurbishment, Nat McLetchie, Creative Designer at Stylise Design said: “Phase 1 of the project consisted of doing a full re-design of the Bar, Bar Lounge and Guest Lounge. Phase 2 involved filling in the swimming pool and transforming it into a light airy space for afternoon tea and dining, now known as The Hilltop Room.

“Stylise Design worked on providing unique pieces throughout all areas, steeped in history and influences from Beatrix Potter’s work. We wanted to create a space that connects creatively and emotionally with all that visit. There are quirky pieces around every corner and we wanted to reflect the legacy of Beatrix Potter making stays at Lindeth truly unforgettable.

“A carpet featuring flowers and anthropomorphic characters was designed to run from the Bar Lounge guiding you through to the Guest Lounge. A wallpaper design was created to connect with the flooring, and hand-applied book wall features can be seen throughout the ground floor. An animal inspired illustration can be seen on the book wall in the Guest Lounge. Walk into the bar and you’ll see a wisteria hanging over the bar with pendants peeking throughout and copper birds to appear flying within the flowers.”
A new vegetable garden and outdoor seating area for al fresco dining completes the transformation.

Hotel manager, Tony Holden said: “We’re all very excited with the hotel’s new look, which I think still captures the spirit of Beatrix Potter’s love of nature and the Lake District landscape, but is very much appealing to 21st century leisure and conference guests. Lindeth Howe has a rich history and heritage, but like all businesses, we need to move with the time and this major investment is not only about offering returning customers a contemporary new experience, but also attracting national and international markets who may not have visited us before.

“We also want to make non-staying guests more aware of us as a destination for dining and provide an inspiring new environment for everything from birthday celebrations and family reunions to afternoon teas and Sunday lunches.”

Katie McCarthy, Design Director of Stylise Design added: “It was an honour to be asked to design and fit-out this project. The history behind this unique building has allowed our creativity and imagination to run wild – literally. It is bespoke design and nature perfectly intertwined and the outcome speaks for itself. Lindeth Howe is a truly special place and it has been a privilege for the Stylise Design team and I to create this transformation. I like to think Beatrix Potter would be proud.”
