Trinity City Hotel – Reaching for the stars

Steeped in history and rich in charm and character, the 4 star Trinity City Hotel on Pearse Street in the heart of Dublin city centre is reaching for the stars, having recently undergone an impressive redevelopment, including refurbishment and provision of additional accommodation, increasing the hotel’s capacity by 30%.

Made up, in parts, of original Georgian buildings and a former fire station, the 262 bedroom hotel is an eclectic mix of contemporary comfort and is part of the Irish owned and managed MHL Hotel Collection.

The project included the redesign of the 4th floor and the addition of a 5th floor to the existing main hotel building, extending access from the existing stair and lift cores, the construction of a six storey extension to the existing courtyard wing, and the refurbishment of external seating areas.

Millimetre Design undertook the design, implementation and project management of the interior fit-out of 83 en-suite guest-rooms and associated corridors, as well as the refurbishment of an external ground floor terrace and courtyard seating areas.

Main contractors were John Paul Construction.

“Our brief was to create stylish contemporary guest-rooms and corridors that reflect the quirky eclectic ambience for which the hotel is renowned, while also providing a high level of comfort and luxury for the guest”, says Amy Rheinisch of Millimetre Design, senior designer and fit out manager for the project.

“We drew our inspiration from the vibrant, eclectic style found in the reception areas of the hotel and the signature purple colour used throughout. We wanted to carry this vibe through to the guest-rooms in a more subtle, streamlined way that would create a cosy, relaxing space for guests, while still remaining true to the essence of the hotel.”

A neutral palette of soft greys and taupes with accents of vibrant purple and rich gold, together with ornate mirrors and bespoke lamps were used in the design.

High quality tactile fabrics were used for drapes, upholstery and soft furnishings, creating the perfect balance between luxury for the guest and practicality for the client.

Durable vinyl feature wall coverings add drama and bring life to the bedroom walls, whilst bespoke 80/20 wool carpeting was used in both the bedrooms and corridors.

Luxury timber effect porcelain floor tiling, also featured in the entrance lobby, has been used in ensuites, where it is paired with Carrera marble effect porcelain wall tilling and nuvolato marble vanity units.

Modern, sleek sanitary ware, coupled with traditional style brassware completes the eclectic look in the en-suites.

The stunning transformation of the bedrooms was matched by that of the ground floor terrace and courtyard seating areas.

“The vision for the ground floor external seating areas was to extend the vibrant interior to the outside and transform the spaces into comfortable inviting sanctuaries to be enjoyed by the guests and maximise the appeal of the reception areas as a whole”, said Amy Rheinisch.

In the outside spaces, seat cushions in vibrant pop colours were added to new furniture to increase the level of comfort and luxury. An array of new planters and planting fill the space with greenery, with a landscaped oasis featuring in the external courtyard. A large retractable canopy with integrated lighting and heating was also installed, along with additional feature lighting and new exterior floor tiling.

A show-stopping decorative railing was installed on the front terrace, in a bespoke patterned design made from laser-cut aluminium panels in a metallic bronze finish. This created an attractive frontage, while also providing added privacy to the terrace.

This was a particularly challenging project for the Millimetre Design Team, as the hotel remained fully operational throughout the entire build.

Co-ordination and communication with the client, design team and main contractor was vital to the project’s success.

As ancillary certifiers, Millimetre Design were responsible for ensuring that all elements of the project relating to the interior fit-out were fully compliant with BCAR. This was done by means of technical submittal approvals and on-site inspections to ensure that all relevant elements were as per specifications.
