This Month in Rail Construction News 3.4

Welcome to the latest edition of Rail Construction News – the premier construction tool for the rail industry.

In this month’s edition of Rail Construction News, we cast an eye over the Aberdeen to Inverness Improvement Project; we take a look at the Koralm Tunnel; and we highlight the Great North Rail Project.

The railway between Aberdeen and Dyce has reopened as planned after Network Rail engineers successfully completed a 14-week-long upgrade. Since the line closed on May 12, over 450 engineers a day have been working around-the-clock to create a second line of track between Aberdeen and Dyce as part of plans to increase services and cut journey times. Over 12 miles of new rails have been laid across 19,000 new sleepers and 66,000 tonnes of stone ballast on a six mile stretch of the line. Signalling systems have also been upgraded and 11 bridges either replaced or refurbished.

Meanwhile, a fast and safe service between Styria and Carinthia, the Koralm Railway is part of the new Southern Line in Austria and one of the most important infrastructure projects in Europe. With the Koralm Railway, passengers will arrive at their destination even quicker. The works include the construction of a new 130 kilometre-long line with 47 kilometres in tunnels, over 100 bridges and twelve new railways stations and stops. The centrepiece of the project is the Koralm Tunnel.

And finally, sitting within the wider Great North Rail Project, which is helping transform rail travel for customers across the north of England, the Liverpool City Region is currently enjoying £340m of railway investment. Upgrades to Liverpool Lime Street, the Halton Curve project and new Maghull North station are a few of the vital schemes that form part of the mammoth investment.

With all this and much more inside, please join us as we explore the projects which continue to shape our nation’s railways.
