Puttshack

Part of Westfield’s £600m retail expansion, Puttshack is a completely new venture that fuses traditional mini golf with the latest technology for an experience unlike any other.

Developed by the Social Entertainment Ventures, the company behind pioneering ping pong venue Bounce, Puttshack comprises four innovative and interactive nine hole courses, a feature bar and a restaurant. The two-storey venue has a total capacity of 750 and opened in June.

By embracing 21st technology, Puttshack has turned mini golf on its head. The Trackaball feature takes accusations of cheating and arguments over scorecards out of the equation. Trackaball means each ball knows who it belongs to, how many times it’s been hit and most importantly, who is winning. Scoring has also been revolutionised with a brand new system where the highest score wins. Every course includes an interactive prize wheel, on which you can win anything from a pizza or a round of drinks to a big cash prize! The wacky and wonderful courses include; a huge pinball table themed hole – where the ball activates lights and sounds in order to rack up high scores, a giant beer pong game and a catch-a-duck fairground hole.

Work began on site in October 2017 with WFC as the main contractor. Puttshack has been designed by award-winning Russell Sage Studio.

The space seeks to evoke feelings of fun, joy, excitement and elation. This has been achieved through impactful layered colours, big bold patterns, fairground inspired lights and nostalgic noises that help to create a sensory overload. Combined with Victorian arcade references, Puttshack is a unique and ground-breaking space.

On the ground floor is a feature staircase that has been cleverly designed  to create interest the moment customers enter before moving up to the action-packed first floor. The island bar is arcade inspired and features an overhead gantry with steel fins radiating outwards in the venue. The food and beverage areas are raised from the courses flooring level and are divided between the bar and hybrid area with approximately 175 covers and the restaurant with approximately 120 covers featuring a raised semi-private dining area. Bespoke lighting and wall artwork add to the overall design concept and enhance the golf courses surrounding the bar and restaurant. A spokesperson for Russell Sage Studio commented:

“Working on the creation of Puttshack as a brand was incredibly rewarding from a creative point of view. A fantastic opportunity such as this one is rare to find and we are incredibly excited to open such an amazing concept.”

The food offering has been carefully curated by Executive Chef Richard Edney. The menu includes a collection of dishes to share, from fried squid to buttermilk marinated popcorn chicken, as well as burgers and sourdough pizzas. The Korean fried chicken burger is a particular standout. The drinks menu has a similarly detailed mix of beverages, from craft beer to a taste of the Caribbean, where over 100 of the world’s finest and rarest rums are available.

Adam Breeden, Founder and CEO of Bounce said: “It has been our ambition to create the best mini golf experience in the world and we believe Puttshack delivers just that. Our world first Trackaball™ technology has enabled us to take mini golf and transform it into something completely revolutionary. In addition to this awesome tech, we have fused a best in class food and beverage offer with stunning design to create the most immersive social entertainment experience yet.”

Plans are in place for a further two Puttshack sites in London. For the time being, Puttshack’s first destination looks set to be one of the capital’s most popular summer openings. To find out more, please visit www.puttshack.com.
