Waterside Cornwall

One of Cornwall’s leading family holiday resorts, Waterside, has completed an exciting renovation of its clubhouse. Ready in time for Waterside’s busiest time of the year, the new look has helped breathe new life into the building and will help the resort continue as a must-visit destination in the area.

Led by award-winning design and creative consultancy DesignLSM, the new design is rooted into the local area and draws inspiration from stunning Cornish beaches and countryside. Speaking to Premier Hospitality, Lead Designer Chloe Mager gave an overview of the project:

“The existing building was feeling quite tired, the client wanted to achieve a more elevated concept and higher star level. The brief was to create something that felt a little bit special and sympathetic to the site’s rural location. Inspired by Cornwall’s iconic landscape, we have emulated the warm textures and colours of the local coastline, creating an inviting and relaxing environment for Waterside’s guests.

“The main reception has been opened up to create a grander and more evident arrival area. Clad in traditional Cornish stone, the reception desk now provides a warm and welcoming check in space whilst bringing elements of the outside in. Distressed timber clad walls and planting in rusted steel planters also reference the textures of the outdoors with bleached timber furniture and a blue-green colour palette evoking a sense of the sea.

“The colour palette flows from the reception through to the conservatory, adjusting slightly to differentiate between the particular areas and drinking / dining offer. Comfortable and inviting, the reception area offers a relaxing place to lounge, whilst the café is cool white and quirky with timber crates on the walls to leave your holiday read or exchange for something new. The bar is dark blue and moody whilst the restaurant features a water-inspired wallpaper and emerald accent colours. The previously unappealing conservatory space is now fresh and inviting with beautiful natural timber bench seating, faceted glass globe lighting and bold orange floor lamps, contrasting with the green cushion fabrics and natural backdrop of the countryside.”

This incredibly tight timescale proved to be one of the project’s most challenging but the response of the client to the work suggests it was worthwhile. Chloe explained:

“Obviously the timescale was a challenge but so was working on a site that is still fully functioning. The main function room, a vast vaulted hall, presented a daunting task to the decorators with the sanding back, repainting and distressing of an entirely timber clad space, all the while working to complete before weekend wedding functions. The hard work has paid off though as the function hall is now light, airy and grand providing a beautiful backdrop for wedding receptions and parties.

“The feedback from the client has been great and they feel that we have really captured their vision for Waterside. The Club House now feels much more contemporary and appealing and fits with a much higher star rating. DesignLSM have also re-branded each area of the Club House, giving the restaurant/bar area and cafe independent identities so that Waterside can become a destination space for people that are not only staying at the resort, but for visitors from the outside that want to dine and drink in beautiful surroundings.”

The clubhouse renovation was just part of a series of projects that will be carried out at Waterside to improve the customer experience. The next phase will involve work to the accommodation lodges as well as external landscaping but this will not take place until after the busy summer period.

The Waterside resort covers over 100 acres of parkland and forms an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful surrounding area. Accommodation is a choice between Nordic style holiday lodges and bungalows while other facilities include a swimming pool, gym, restaurant and café/bar.

Waterside is also home to an abundance of wildlife thanks to two acres of well-stocked fishing lake. There is also a range of activities available on site, from Segway adventure tours to foot golf and fishing.
