For the third year in a row, TransPennine Express (TPE) and train manufacturer Siemens are celebrating after winning a Golden Spanner Award for the Class 185 fleet of trains.

The annual awards, which celebrate excellence in train maintenance and are organised by Modern Railways magazine, took place on Friday 23 November. For the fifth time in total, TPE’s fleet of Class 185 trains have been awarded the Golden Spanner Award for being the most reliable modern diesel multiple units in Great Britain.

This year, the Class 185’s completed their £32million upgrade, which has transformed our current fleet of trains to like-new standards. Now our customers have access to standard plug and USB sockets at every pair of seats on board, our onboard entertainment system ‘Exstream’ and bigger tables to allow more space for laptops and devices and LED lighting throughout.

Will Jagger, Fleet Technical Manager for TPE, said: “This award reflects the relentless efforts made by the Fleet Team and our colleagues at Siemens, often ably assisted by train crews, to drive down the number of technical faults on our trains. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played a part in making our Class 185’s the most reliable train in its field.”

Simon Wildgoose, Fleet Delivery Manager of the TPE Class 185 said: “Train reliability requires a proactive partnership between the maintainer and the operator. This outstanding result for our recently fully refurbished and upgraded Class 185 fleet is a tribute to the hard work of the Siemens maintenance team and TransPennine Express train crew and operations personnel.”
