SUSHISAMBA

SUSHISAMBA has opened its highly anticipated second London location in the heart of Covent Garden. Known for its unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine and culture, the new venue at the heart of the iconic Opera Terrace atop the historic Grade II listed Market Building is a stunning addition to the brands existing locations in Miami, Las Vegas, London and Amsterdam.

Guests enter the restaurant via a spiral orange marble staircase featuring a large-scale street art mural depicting Japanese mythology. The dining room with its Oscar Niemeyer inspired black and white marble floors offer guests three environmental experiences. A ‘living ceiling,’ alive with lush South American & Japanese plants and foliage, welcomes guests in the entryway, bar and beyond. The dramatic setting continues with a bustling exposed kitchen framed by Japanese lanterns, high energy sushi bar with its abstract Japanese ‘fan’ ceiling, and sweeping views of the Piazza below. In the private dining room, the copper metal curtains draw the eye to the original buildings wooden beams, while the double sided mirrored and Japanese screen panels frame the room that also features its own entrance and balcony.

Throughout the bar and restaurant, a series of bespoke pieces by a select group of international artisans – each made using natural materials – fills the space. From the table tops in parchment leather or liquid metal and selenite stone pendant lights to the stunning screens across the restaurant space featuring mother of pearl and eggshell, the design captures the vibrancy and spirit of the SUSHISAMBA brand. Amsterdam-based design agency Too Many Agencies worked closely with Dutch company Cravt Original to create and source these interactive installations.

Open for both dinner and lunch as of 1 November, SUSHISAMBA Covent Garden features a 128-seat dining room; a bar for up to 26 and a sushi bar with 14 counter seats. A striking private dining room with dedicated entrance and balcony offers an intimate space for up to 16 guests or for standing cocktail receptions for up to 30, while the entire space can accommodate events for up to 400. In the warmer months the open terrace will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

On the extensive bar menu, alongside SUSHISAMBA signatures such as the monthly-changing seasonal Sambatini®, are a selection of new Samba Serves created exclusively for the new location by Head of Spirit and Cocktail Development Rich Woods. Highlights include the Japanese Americano, made with preserved cherry blossom-infused Campari, rosé vermouth, lychee and plum and the Ancho Rio, a fiery Manhattan-style cocktail with Albelha cachaça, Punt E Mes, coconut, stirred down with caramel and Ancho Reyes chilli liqueur.

On the culinary front, a selection of location’s exclusive dishes includes the Samba Covent Garden Roll, bringing together tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white fish, avocado, cucumber, red onion, sweet potato corn, aji Amarillo and leche de tigre. Robata Pork Belly with butterscotch miso, Scallop with vanilla, jalapeño, mango and aji Amarillo; Octopus with aji panca, peppers and nori from the fiery robata grill and the Kobe Bun with horseradish mayo, aji Amarillo mustard, pickled onion, shallot and nori. Creative desserts include The Pear with nashi pear, cranberry, guava, shiso and lime sorbet.

SUSHISAMBA is open daily from 11:30am to 12:30am Monday to Thursday, from 11:30am to 1am Friday and Saturday and from 11:30am to 11:30pm on Sunday.

Noble Russell produces bespoke banquettes for SUSHISAMBA Covent Garden

Contractors WFC commissioned Noble Russell to produce a large range of bold banquette seating for SUSHISAMBA’s second London restaurant.

Located in Covent Garden, on the first floor of the historic Grade II listed market building, SUSHISAMBA’s interior designers, ‘Too Many Agencies’ required the expertise of Noble Russell’s team to produce all the custom-built seating units for this dramatic new interior.

In the main restaurant area, the stunning central seating units consist of upholstery in horizontal flutes and feature brass plinths; an integral brass planter which houses some of the many plants featured throughout the interior separates the back to back units.

Bespoke alcove units were required to fit precisely into the original eaves and have fluted back rests with built-in LED lighting.

In the separate bar area, the lounge bench seating has vibrant patterned backrests, plain seating pads and features brass upstands and plinths.

Other seating includes six freestanding sofa units with brass tube legs and plinths and three horseshoe banquettes with fluted vertical upholstery also stood on brass plinths.

Finally, three eye-catching circular ‘feature booths’ have been constructed on raised plinths, wrapped by large powder-coated mild-steel black cages and accessorised with weaved black rope.

The completed banquettes were installed by Noble Russell’s professional team on budget and in time for the restaurant’s star-studded opening in November.
