Wine lover’s paradise – Beckford Bottle Shop

Opening its second site in Bath, Beckford Bottle Shop offers over 250 carefully chosen wines from around the world to buy or drink, together with a curated selection of local craft beers, ciders and spirits.

The thoughtfully refurbished site on Saville Row, next to The Assembly Rooms, divides into four interconnected parts: Wine Shop, Tasting Rooms, Cheese & Charcuterie Counter and Cellar Lounge.

The Tasting Rooms provide a charming, relaxed venue to drink and enjoy wine accompanied by inventive, tasty ‘small plates’ (English tapas style) as well as the very best of British cheese and charcuterie from the neighbouring counter.

Locals can just pop-in or meet friends for a quick glass of wine and a tasty bite, or perhaps, indulge in a half bottle of prosecco and fresh peach Bellini accompanied by a delicate Petite Madeleine or Biscotti.

For lunch and supper, a fuller meal can be created from several small plates with a bottle of wine selected from the shop. All the bottles in the Wine Shop can be opened for a set corkage charge giving an enormous range to try at an unusually decent price.

Downstairs the Cellar Lounge provides more intimate seating to while away the evenings in great company. There are monthly tasting events featuring wine makers from around the world. At the back of the shop there is a private dining room for small functions and educational events.

According to Beckford Bottle Shop: “We think that wine should be sold in a lovely environment, not in a warehouse or in a supermarket, by knowledgeable staff and at good prices.

“Buying wine should not be intimidating or too serious it should be fun and interesting. Our list has been carefully selected to offer a great depth of choice including many wines not available anywhere else and at the best prices we can offer.

“There is much too much written about wine, much of it pompous and overly elitist. The simple rule is you should always buy what you like but it can be rewarding to try new wine once in a while and expand your wine horizon!”

The Beckford Bottle Shop opened its first site in Tisbury, Wiltshire in November 2015 as a spin- off from the popular food-led Beckford Arms, Talbot Inn and Lord Poulett Arms country pubs.

The Tasting Rooms open in the morning for coffee and treats such as apple strudel, and then evolve throughout the day.

On Sundays, the small plates menu focusses on brunch accompanied by a superb Bloody or Virgin Mary.

Co-owner Dan Brod said: “We are fiercely independent and passionate about great food and wine and above all warm hospitality and are all truly excited about bringing this spirit to beautiful Saville Row in a city we have always loved.”
