Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa

Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, the luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the Lake District, has announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art destination spa.

The Falls Spa at Lodore Falls Hotel is the final phase of a £10m redevelopment at the hotel. Previous elements of the redevelopment included a refurbishment of the hotel’s entire ground floor, the opening of a brand new restaurant and the addition of 18 bedroom suites.

With panoramic views of Derwentwater and the spectacular Catbells Mountain Range, The Falls Spa offers guests a cosy, Scandi-inspired retreat from which to enjoy and harness the healing powers of nature.

Guests at The Falls Spa are encouraged to make the most of the spectacular location, with invigorating alfresco spa experiences including an open-air cold drench bucket and hot shower. The highlight is a 16-meter outdoor infinity-edge vitality pool, one of the largest in the country, with neck jets, underwater loungers and an amazing overflow hot tub, arguably the most Instagrammable location in the Lake District!

The Falls Spa also boasts a glass-fronted Finnish sauna, four-person mud rasul, ice fountain, four thermal suites including a laconium, salt steam room, aroma steam room and herbal sauna. Meanwhile, a champagne bar and heated mosaic loungers offer the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

To compliment the much-anticipated new spa opening, the hotel is also introducing 18 new contemporary and spacious Spa Suites. All suites feature Scandi-style decor and designer furniture, luxury bathrooms and cosy lounge seating areas. Most also offer floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-in wardrobes and superb views over the lake, forest, fells and waterfall.

The new Spa Suites brings the total number of rooms at Lodore Falls Hotel to 87 and creates a brand-new UK spa destination in the heart of the Lake District. These exciting new developments further strengthen Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa’s leading position as one of the most charming Lake District Hotels renowned for unrivalled personal attention and excellent service.

Earlier in 2018, phase two of the development saw the opening of Mizu restaurant and four spacious bedroom suites. The 70-cover Mizu takes its name from Japanese for ‘falling water’ and occupies a prime spot overlooking the stunning Lodore Falls waterfall.

Mizu serves a fusion of Asian cuisine including: Malaysian, Japanese and Thai dishes under the direction of new Head Chef, Kasun Jayasooriya. A talented and innovative chef, he brings a dynamic energy to another dining experience at this luxury lakeside hotel. Guests can sample sensational sushi and sashimi, crisp tempura, fragrant curries and delicately spiced bowls of ramen, as well as tender meat, chicken and fish dishes from the grill, Mizu-style.

The décor creates a relaxed ambience with cool, elemental colours, floor-to-ceiling windows coupled with natural textures and materials. This is the second restaurant for Lodore Falls Hotel as they already boast popular 2 AA Rosette Lake View Restaurant.

Marketing Director of Lake District Hotels, Daniella Hope, said:

“We are delighted to have made recent investment, such as refurbishing our public areas, developing new larger, luxurious bedroom suites and now with the creation and launch of Mizu restaurant. The stunning natural beauty of the Lake District makes it a competitive market place but we at Lodore Falls Hotel are confident that we offer something uniquely exciting.”

At the same time as the restaurant opening, four large bedroom suites with private riverside balconies were made available.

The completion of the hotel’s mammoth development is a major landmark for Lodore Falls and the local area. A total of 12 new jobs have been created within the spa, with more to follow, while Mizu created a further 9 new jobs.

Scott Harrington: In conversation

Over a 3 year period from design through to construction, the development project was project managed by Hyde Harrington. Premier Hospitality spoke to Director, Scott Harrington about the all-encompassing work.

How did you get involved with this project?

“We have worked with the client on previous projects to develop the spa at Armathwaite Hall, the Inn on the Square refurbishment in Keswick and also two projects at the Inn on the Lake, Glenridding, and are pleased to have a long-standing relationship with them.

“We were approached and asked to project manage the development design prior to our own involvement by the architects, Unwin Jones Partnership, initially de-risking the project to get budget confidence at the outset and then putting the consultant team together. We also acted as quantity surveyors whilst Cundall provided the civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy.  The main contractor was Thomas Armstrong Construction Ltd and the main subcontractor was PKE Engineering.”

Please can you provide us with a guide around the work.

“There’s an existing hotel to the southern part of the Beck and on the northern side of the Beck we’ve built the new spa development, which has 14 bedrooms plus the spa. On the southern side we’ve extended the existing hotel to provide a new conservatory, restaurant and another 4 bedrooms. They are all high class suites and the spa development is very cutting edge. It’s an unusual and high class development. The clients are very brave in how they go about their developments at all of their hotels.”

How important was it to be involved with the hotel?

“It’s a privilege to be working with them. We are also now working with the client on another project at one of their other hotels. It’s important that they get what they do right and it’s nice that they ask us to help them to help improve their developments. They are certainly one of the leading hotel providers in the Lakes and certainly this facility is right up there with the very best in the Lakes.”

Initially the client requested layout designs from a number of contractors’ but we won the project from our competitors because of our unique design and excellent overall concept for the space. It’s a rare opportunity when a client is prepared to have full faith in your design capabilities from the outset and throughout the project we continued to push the design boundaries even further to create something truly special.”
