Wine Cellar Dockner

Completed in 2017, the Dockner Wine Cellar is an award-winning, modern utility building. Designed by Austria-based architects goebl architecture for client Winzerhof Docker, the project is located in North East Austria.

The Dockner Wine Cellar was recently one of the successful projects at The Architecture Masterprize 2018 in the ‘Agricultural Buildings’ category. The Architecture Masterprize celebrates the best in design excellence and innovation across architecture, interior design and landscape design. It is dedicated to showcasing and promoting exceptional talent, and the value of the art and science of architecture in enriching our lives. A jury of esteemed architects, industry professionals and academics consider entries in 41 categories

The Dockner Wine Cellar is a modern utility building that ensures Winzerhof Docker can optimise its business for sustainability and resource conservation. A structure with a rectangular footprint has been placed on the elongated property, which stretches from east to west. The basement of the new utility building is built partially into the steep sloping hill. The building is divided into three height levels. To the west is a raised deck with a view of Göttweig Abbey. This shelters a forecourt with a sunken loading ramp to the lower level.

The wine cellar rises up adjacent to the deck and is covered by a gently inclined tent roof. A flat arched roof spans the eastern section of the vehicle fleet. The lower storey includes a pallet warehouse with space for approximately 1500 pallets, a bottling line and a storage area that partly runs into the hill. All the walls have an industrial feel thanks to presence of visible concrete whereas upstairs gold-coated panels have been used to provide interior insulation.

Externally, a curving wall with the Winzerhof Dockner lettering leads the way inside to a room where visitors are greeted by wooden wine barrels and steel containers. From this room visitors can access a terrace that boasts breath-taking views of the historic Göttweig Abbey. Few locations can offer such a unique landscape from which to enjoy wine tasting and other events.

The project’s design team included Lukas Göbl, Fritz Göbl, Miljan Stojkovic and AndrĂ©s Espana. Lighting design was overseen by Viabizzuno, with Harrer & Harrer looking after Structural Framework Planning.

Winzerhof Docker boasts 80 hectares of vineyards around the Göttweiger Berg mountain. The family run business has been producing award-winning produce for many years. The new cellar is the company’s second contemporary building. It is both architecturally and technically one of the most modern cellars of its kind in Austria. It was officially opened in November 2017.
