The Edgbaston

The Edgbaston is a 20 bedroom boutique hotel and cocktail lounge located in Edgbaston, Birmingham. It is a unique refuge of timeless elegance, unwavering taste and unrivalled care and courtesy.

An effortless arrival experience to The Edgbaston sets the tone of a spectacular visit – much like the welcome offered by a gracious friend at a fine private residence. Meticulous and discreet personal service is flawlessly delivered by carefully noting and recalling guest’s preferences from preceding visits.

The Edgbaston’s 20 contemporary en-suite bedrooms are of the highest standard. During a stay at the Edgbaston, guests are accommodated in one of the hotels individually decorated, contemporary, luxury bedrooms. Each en-suite room has a distinct contemporary design offering king size beds, an abundance of cushions and throws so that a stay at the hotel is truly relaxing. The striking modern interiors of the bedroom complement the magnificent original features of the building.

Each room was designed by the owners of the hotel, Stuart and Darren Insall, alongside leading hospitality design studio, Faber, and pay homage to the building’s Victorian past and early romantic era.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality about the project, Tony Matters, Creative Director of Faber said: “We first started working with The Edgbaston some five or six years ago, ahead of its opening – then a cocktail lounge and boutique hotel with just six rooms. With the venue proving a huge success – now one of the most recognised cocktail bars in the country – we were invited back to design a new building with 14 extra bedrooms.

“Five years is a long time in terms of design, new products and possibilities emerge, and you could end up with something very different from the original. We wanted the new bedrooms to feel like a more refined version of the original concept – taking key features that worked well first time round but enhancing them or adding new twists – to keep a coherence between the two buildings.”

Prominent characteristic features are revealed to guests throughout the boutique hotel, including original Victorian architecture, evident in both inside and out. Some guests will find a favourite room and return every time, while others will try to choose a different one each visit.

Tony added: “Each room uses the same palette of materials, but due to the nature of the building – every room being a different size and shape – the resulting finish varies, making each room feel unique.
“We spent a lot of time thinking about exactly what people want from the rooms to make sure the attention to detail was spot on. One of my favourite features are the floor to ceiling upholstered headboard walls. The communal areas also make a real statement, in particular the hallway on the ground floor is quite striking.”

Since completion, feedback about the new rooms and their design has been positive.

“Feedback in general has been excellent. People have commented on how great the rooms look and how fantastic the design is as a whole,” said Tony.

“It has been great to continue a long-term working relationship with the client and to help them grow as a business. For us, it is also about learning through design. I believe design is never finished, you can always improve through observing what works, and what doesn’t for the client. It’s this evolutionary approach to design that makes a project work harder for the client.” added Tony.

At The Edgbaston, there are also three beautifully designed cocktail lounges to choose from. In a stylist art deco interior of jet-black and gold, the Edgbaston Cocktail lounge is all about cocktails. Nationally recognised bartenders, most recently UK Bar Team of the Year, serve classic cocktails with wit and style, a throwback to the classic era of Martinis before dinner and service tableside. The three cocktail lounges within the hotel offer one of the finest spirits collections in the UK, and its Moet Terrace is the only one outside of London.

Alongside amazing cocktails, they have an informal bar menu inspired by broad European and British influences with dishes designed for sampling and sharing, served from 6pm until late daily in the vibrant atmospheric bar. Their award winning Afternoon Tea is served daily in the cocktail lounge from 12 noon until 9pm Sunday to Friday and 12pm until 6pm on Saturdays, a delicious decadent treat not to be missed, reservations are required in advance.

All resident guests to the hotel also benefit from the beautiful Moet Terrace garden area and there is free parking for one vehicle.
