Sandy Mount House

With a welcoming ambience, delicious food, real ales, craft beers and cocktails, Sandy Mount House is a vibrant gathering place for people of all ages and from all walks of life – from kite surfers, to dog walkers to families and local residents of Rhosneigr and Anglesey, as well as visitors from further afield.

Sandy Mount House has been created on the site of the old Sandymount building on Rhosneigr High Street. New owners Louise and Philip Goodwin have created a stylish new destination with the help of an expert team including renowned designer Michelle Derbyshire. With a total investment of over £2.5 million, a complete refurbishment of the existing building and outdoor space has been carried out to create a luxurious and contemporary venue.

Louise Goodwin told Premier Hospitality prior to opening: “We spend a lot of time in Anglesey and the thing I miss about home when we are there is the choice and quality of hospitality venues on offer, particularly now in Manchester or Liverpool – there aren’t really many options in North Wales.

“We want to do really good quality food and drink with a warm welcome and wanted to create somewhere special where people can spend time with friends and loved ones in a homely place with a warm welcome. Anglesey is a cool place; it is quite hip and we feel we have created somewhere that reflects that and will attract more people to the island.”

The development was offered funding of £260,000 from the Micro Small Business Fund (MSBF) through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

The new destination restaurant and bar marked the start of extensive construction and refurbishment works in April 2018 with a visit from the Welsh Government Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Lord Elis-Thomas.

Lord Elis-Thomas commented: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to provide support for what will be a very high quality development for Anglesey. It was an excellent opportunity to meet the team and see their plans for Sandy Mount. Their commitment and passion to making this development work for Anglesey and for Rhosneigr is clear and I wish them well over the next few months.”

Working with Wilde Architects, the Sandy Mount House build was completed by family-run Preston-based builders Parkinson & Hartley and started with a complete strip-out of the building and various structural changes including the removal of several walls.

Now complete, the site features a 100+ cover restaurant for relaxed family dining, a bar and seven luxury hotel rooms.

Michelle Derbyshire, designer for the new restaurant and hotel said: “I was born in Sydney and spent all of my time on the beach and coast. The relaxed, stylish and casual lifestyle of Sydney is in my blood and I have been aching to do a place that reflects this vibe. Rhosneigr could not be a more wonderful location with its glorious costal landscape. Sandy Mount House will be the first hotel that I have designed too – it’s something I have always wanted to do. I am also a residential designer and feel that a good hotel should feel like a home away from home.”

Louise and Philip commissioned specialist hospitality consultants One Call Management to manage the operational aspects of Sandy Mount House, and One Call’s Kaushik Mistry was very closely involved from the start of the project.

Kaushik said: “We had a great team on board to support us in delivering Louise and Phil’s vision for Sandy Mount House and after months of work and planning behind the scenes, it’s very exciting to see the physical transformation take place.”

Louise added: “This project means a great deal to me given that we spend a lot of time in the area. We want to bring something new to this special place. I also think it is part of the bigger picture of attracting people to Anglesey and North Wales. I think traditionally the area is a North West visitor destination but I think with something like this, it will hopefully attract people form further afield.

“We also want other things to follow; we don’t want to be the only show in town. We hope that people will follow suit and also invest in the area.”
