The Townhouse Mykonos

After a meticulous three year renovation and restoration project led by London-based architect Nader Gebran, a one-time historic manor house, registered as a protected ‘Modern Monument’ under the Green Antiquities Chamber, has been reborn as The Townhouse Mykonos, a new five-star luxury boutique hotel in the heart of the storied island’s whitewashed town centre.

Speaking to PREMIER HOSPITLAITY INTERNATIONAL about the project, Nader Gebran said: “HotelREZ Hotels & Resorts, which represents and manages over 1,000 hotels in 35 countries, commissioned me to both project manage and deliver all architectural and interior design aspects of The Townhouse Mykonos.

“The original brief was to refurbish an 18th-century aristocratic manor house and home to the first Mayor of Mykonos into a beautifully decadent boutique hotel. As this building is protected by Greek archaeology and a stones’ throw from UNESCO protected sites there were significant issues, laws and regulations that had to be dealt with. The hotel is located in the cosmopolitan heart of the historic old town (Chora) of Mykonos Island. My approach was to preserve the envelop and create a whole new building behind it, paying homage to its history whilst understanding the requirements of its high net worth customer base.  The hotel is comprised of 19 rooms in addition to a cocktail bar, three terraces, a roof top sky bar and deck with an infinity pool and Michelin star pop up restaurants.”

Originally built in the 18th century, the new hotel, which features 11 rooms and 7 suites, the 54 Cocktail Bar and & Sunset Lounge and premium fitness club Pump Gym, seamlessly combines the building’s original neoclassical design with modern furnishings, technological comforts and the superior personalised service expected of a luxury property today.

Nader said: “I was involved in every detail of the project. The white distress ceiling is a piece of art by itself; it stands out throughout the hotel. The red external windows and doors and the gold metallic colour in some furniture and lighting fixtures also adds elegance and uniqueness to the project. One room type, the Duplex Deluxe room, is a replication of the majority of the tiny houses found in Mykonos, a characteristic of the Cycladic architecture.

“Every element in the project has its own statement. In any space of the hotel there is a “wow” factor.”

Exploring Mykonos just got much easier as the luxurious home-away-from-home is centrally located in the heart of the historic town across from the waterfront adjacent to Little Venice. Guests can explore the winding stone footpaths of Mykonos town while having their fill of choices of the best Greek cuisine and culture available. If exploring the town by foot doesn’t get the heart rate up enough, Townhouse guests will be treated to an unparalleled level of stylish Greek elegance and hospitality that has made the island so famous with visitors over the last two decades. The 54 Cocktail Bar & Sunset Lounge continues its reign as one of Mykonos’ hot spots offering handcrafted cocktails, sultry music and incredible sunset views, making each night a magical experience.
Guests also have complimentary access to Pump Gym, Mykonos’ newest, full service gym – the only one located in the heart of town. Come winter, The Townhouse and Pump Gym will be offering a Winter Detox & Fitness Bootcamp program focusing on detox, weight loss and nutrition.

The Townhouse Mykonos also makes for the ideal intimate dream wedding venue as all 19 rooms can be booked on an exclusive basis, but mostly because the hotel’s Rooftop Terrace overlooking the Aegean Sea and local ancient settlements provides the perfect fantasy backdrop to say “I do.”

Nader added: “I have worked on many international projects, with large firms, however, as my first solo project as an independent architect, it has both helped me to establish my studio and underpin my career as a solo architect. Mykonos is one of the most sought after global destinations so to design, lead and manage the implementation of what is now a luxury five star graded hotel in the historical heart of Mykonos old town is something unique that very few architects would have the opportunity to do. I hope I am able to leverage this and work on further hotels, villas and luxury and commercial properties.”
