Gavin shows how it’s done

Showing how it’s done is Gavin Baker, award-winning site manager at Shanly Homes’ Knights Mead development in Chertsey.

He puts his achievement down to “Having a good product, not too over- technical with quite an efficient and effective design; good phasing of construction; efficient co-ordination of men and materials; having good tradesmen on site and setting and achieving high standards through educating the workforce as to what is expected of them.”

“Shanly Homes were very pleased with the award, which is a good reflection of the quality of the build in a development which is selling extremely well, with new residents moving in and a considerable number of house reservations. The award is not only a personal accolade; it reflects well on the whole company”

“Nowadays the market is tougher and purchasers are looking for a high standard. Both myself and the company like to set high standards and there is no reason why we can’t achieve them” he said.

Gavin who is 48 started in the construction industry at the age of 21 having completed his HNC/HND in construction studies before starting as a management trainee and subsequently progressing to site manager.

He has worked with Shanly Homes for over 10 years. “Things have gone well, culminating in winning the Pride in the Job Award. It would be good to win a Seal of Excellence and we’re over the first hurdle, but winning the current award is a great achievement in itself” he said.

The development includes a stylish collection of thirty-two three and four bedroom houses, with thoughtful consideration to the attractive elevations and well planned accommodation over two or three floors, designed for the needs of modern living.

Kitchens include quality contemporary units with composite stone work surfaces, matching upstands and a range of appliances, including: Siemens stainless steel oven; combi oven (microwave); four ring gas hob and extractor hood; integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher; washer/dryer and ceramic tiled floor.

Bathrooms include contemporary white sanitary ware; full height ceramic tiled walls to en suite shower cubicles and ceramic tiled floors. All homes have gas fired central heating with energy efficient A-rated boiler, mains smoke detectors and a solar panel to assist water heating.

The development is now in its final phase with 14 homes yet to be completed. Overall completion is due in November 2011.

Chertsey has a good selection of independent retailers as well as a number of high street names including a large Sainsbury’s and also a farmers market every Saturday. In addition, there are excellent shopping facilities in nearby Staines.

The area also boasts a good selection of pubs, bars and restaurants catering for most tastes. Chertsey railway station is situated within easy reach, providing services to London Waterloo with a journey time of under one hour.
